There's a song GEISHA GIRL, written by Lawton Williams, and recorded by Dave Dudley, Hank Locklin, Nick Lowe, Daniel O'Donnell, Hank Snow, Ernest Tubb, and several others.

Well this is an old thread but I suppose it's not too late to post the words. I still often sing this song from memory but I'll have to type out the words:

GEISHA GIRL

Have you ever heard a love song that you didn't understand
Were you met her in a teahouse on the island of Japan
And have you ever traveled over many thousand miles
To see a pretty geisha girl dressed in oriental style
(chorus)
They read it in the tealeaves and it's written in the sand
I found love by the heart-full in a foreign distant land
Tell the home folks that I'm happy with someone that's true I know
I love a pretty geisha girl where the ocean breezes blow

I've stood and watched the sunrise from the waters of the sea
I've wondered how much beauty in this whole world can there be
My dreams are all worth dreaming and it makes life worthwhile
To see my pretty geisha girl dressed in oriental style
(chorus)

There is also the show 'The Geisha' (1896) by Sydney Jones which has lots of good songs.

"Geisha Girl" lyrics posted by McLean are those of Hank Locklin, 1957.
Song written by Lawton Williams and first performed by Locklin.

His "Fraulein" also came out in 1957.

Hard to believe that a thread written in 1998 is just being answered now. If it was a difficult question i would understand but Geisha Girl? How did this get slipped between the cracks.
Sandy,
Hank Locklin is the rendition I know as well.

I don't think Newfoundlander is around any more as his last post was on the thread "FLESH AND BLOOD" which was posted in 98.

I think Jim Dixon was cleaning up some old unanswered threads so he re-opened it. I have recordings of both Hank Locklin and Hank Snow singing it. Locklin had the hit with it.

I also have the Hank Locklin vinyl.

YouTube has both Hank Locklin's and Hank Snow's version of GEISHA GIRL.

Sandy: Your lyrics are perfect—phonetically—but I wonder if it isn't "far and distant land" rather than "foreign...".

I suppose it doesn't matter, since they sound pretty much the same.

Yeah, I know "far and distant" is redundant, but it's sort of a cliché.

Hi Jim,
I wrote the words out as I had heard and learned them years ago. I have heard this song sung with "far and distant" and perhaps have sometimes sung it that way myself. I just listened to the recordings of both Hanks and my ear hears "foreign distant" but it is so close as to be subjective. I then checked Cowpie for Locklin's lyrics and Snow's site gor his. Both have "foreign distant" attributed to songwriter Lawton Williams. Either way works fine!

PS I also misspelled "Where"
Geisha Girl on Cowpie

The only way I ever heard it was "far and distant". Not to say that it was the only way.
