Lyr Req: Wine with Dinner (Loudon Wainwright III)

Subject: wainwright - drinks before dinner
From: GUEST,tjh

Looking for lyrics or a recording of an old Loudon Wainwright song. Not sure of its proper title.

Drinks before dinner... After dinner drinks...

The friend we used to play this with is no longer around and we'd like to relearn it.

Thanks

Looks like the title might be "Drinking Song" but I didn't find any lyrics. Sorry. Somebody else?

I've got it on tape somewhere, so I'll try and look it out. It's on his T Shirt LP. Great drinking song.

"Drinks before dinner, drinks with dinner, after dinner drinks, ...................., help me Rhonnda, locate my cuff links"

Let's see what I remember:

Drinks before dinner and wine with dinner
And after dinner drinks.
Single entendre, help me Rhonda,
Locate my cufflinks.
Come with me and you will see,
It all will turn out right.
'Cause Rudolph the red nosed wino's,
Going to ride his sleigh tonight.

Don't know who I insulted,
Maybe it was you.
The drinks I had resulted,
In a tirade or two.
I went to town to get in trouble,
I accomplished that.
Drank some drinks flew off the handle,
Right off of the bat.

This should help someone get started. My vinyl records are in storage, so I cannot access the album.

The song is called: Wine with Dinner. It must be good - he put it twice on the T shirt album.

No on-line lyrics yet, this info from his website.

Refresh.

Some Mudcatter knows this song better than I do.

"Me I'm into fruit and grains, Give me alcohol!

Yet another line floating in my memory.

Finally dug out the tape and wore out the pause button to get this lot. You were spot on with that, Rog. Aussiebloke, good job you mentioned the Nightcap version, as I'd clean forgotten it. Here goes.

WINE WITH DINNER

Don't know who I insulted. Maybe it was you.
The drinks I had resulted in a tirade or two.
I went to town to get in trouble. I accomplished that.
Drank some drinks, flew off the handle, right off of the bat.

CHORUS:
Drinks before dinner and wine with dinner and after-dinner drinks.
Single entendre, help me, Rhonda, look for my cufflinks.
Come with me and you will see it all will be all right.
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Wino's gonna guide our sleigh tonight.

Sometimes when I drink too much, the next day I can't think.
Sometimes when I drink too much, the next day I can't drink.
Sometimes when I drink too much, I feel like throwing up.
Sometimes when I drink too much, I cannot get it up.

CHORUS

Fiddle/honky-tonk piano/guitar break

They say that drink will shrivel my liver and also wreck my looks.
But my hero is Deano Martin. I like Foster Brooks.
I know a little cozy joint where you and I can go.
Let's us spend a lost weekend under the volcano.

CHORUS (fades by Rudolph)

WINE WITH DINNER (NIGHTCAP)

(Fades up with instrumental break)
(Loudon as drunk as a monkey)

Keep your hemp and your mushrooms, your smack and Nembutal
Me, I'm into fruit and grains. Gimme alcohol.
Call me thirsty. Call me oral. Call me what you like.
When I'm sober, call me Loudon. Do not call me back.

CHORUS

.... Help me, Rhonda, search for missing links.

(Fades out to drunken tap dance)

Apologies to Loudon for dishing out the lyric, but it's a great song, and no one can quite do it like him.

Skipjack,

Nice work! A friend of mine sent me the lyrics this AM and they agree with yours. On some choruses, Loudon inserts "Search for missing links" in place of "Look for my cufflinks".

The drug you were unsure of is Nembutal. It contains Pentobarbital as an active ingredient. In short, it is a barbiturate that depresses the central nervous system. It is highly intoxicating and highly addictive.

SUMMER'S ALMOST OVER
Loudon Wainwright III, from "T Shirt"

Summer's almost over. Soon it's back to school.
Soon they'll drain the water out of the swimming pool.
Adopt a brand new attitude, a positive outlook.
Buy yourself some pencils and a loose-leaf notebook.

Summer's almost over. A new season's coming up.
Time to gird your loins and don your jockstrap and your cup.
The hiatus is ended. The lax living has to stop.
Get rid of that beer belly. Do wind sprints till you drop.

Summer's almost over. September's round the bend.
Temperatures are dropping. Summer love must end.
The one you met upon the beach and knew in the canoe,
You must tell her at the cookout. Your romance is through.

Summer's almost over, fading like a tan.
Vacation time is running out like an unplugged fan.
Labor Day is coming. Wet the old grindstone.
For all those lazy, hazy, crazy days you must atone.
