Lyr Req/Add: My Babe (Willie Dixon)

Well, it's a composer request, really.

Who wrote the old blues 'My babe'? The 'My babe, he don't stand no cheatin...' one.

We've recorded it, but can't find a composer to credit.

Thanks - Ian B

I believe Willie Dixon wrote it. I see that it's credited to Willie Dixon on several websites. Seems right to me. Great song. I especially like Little Walter's version.

Willie Dixon, Hoochie Coochie Music, admin. by Bug Music BMI. Little Walter (Marion Walter Jacobs) recorded it (1955) and had the classic hit version on Chess Records. Currently available on MCA/Chess 50th Anniversary edition "Little Walter, His Best". Recommended. Willie Dixon is probably the greatest songwriter in the history of the blues.

If anyone wants lyrics, they're here in the forum (credited to Fred McDowell there, but I think it is Willie Dixon).

Lyrics to the Little Walter version are here.

My Babe
Recorded in 1955 for the Chess label in Chicago as per "Little Walter and his Jukes".

MY BABE (Willie Dixon)

My baby don't stand no cheatin', my babe
Oh yeah she don't stand no cheatin', my babe
Oh yeah she don't stand no cheatin',
She don't stand none of that midnight creepin'
My babe, true little baby, my babe

My babe, I know she love me, my babe
Oh yes, I know she love me, my babe
Oh yes, I know she love me,
She don't do nothin' but kiss and hug me
My babe, true little baby, my babe

- solo -

My baby don't stand no cheatin', my babe
Oh no, she don't stand no cheatin', my babe
Oh no, she don't stand no cheatin',
Ev'rything she do she do so pleasin'
My babe, true little baby, my babe

My baby don't stand no foolin', my babe
Oh yeah, she don't stand no foolin', my babe
Oh yeah, she don't stand no foolin',
When she's hot there ain't no coolin'
My babe, true little baby, my babe
She's my baby (true little baby) ...

How about the other "My Babe" recorded by The Righteous Bros. and Foghat? Who wrote that one?

My books say Willie Dixon as well. I'd like it to be Fred McD as he's my favourite and I suspect Willie D was a bit more streetwise at registering copyright (like W.C.Handy) (allegedly!!).

Mondegreen note:

I always thought they were singing "cool little baby," not "true little baby"...

Great song, either way.

The DT entry to which Pene Azul provided a link (above) shows that Fred McDowell got a publishing company writing credit, just like Wille Dixon did -- maybe both of them took credit for their "arrangements " of a traditional piece.

I had the pleasure of hearing the original from Willie Dixon more than 30 years ago in England and more recently by Charlie Musselwhite at Victoria Jazz Festival (Canada)about 10 years back; one of my favourite tunes from two of my favourite artists.
