09 Apr 02 - 07:20 AM (#686033) Subject: How do I record VCDs? From: GUEST,JTT Apparently it's possible to record from a TV show on to your hard drive. I've got a TV card in my PC; it seems that I now need to record the show in an mpeg format, then record that as a VCD onto a CD? Anyone done this? What software did you use? How did it work? |

I can record mpeg clips using the haupphauge software I got with the TV card but I would like to put a whole show onto VCD if that is possible. I would assume that using something like DirectCD or InCD to mount a CD-RW as a useable disk I could record directly onto the CD-RW but would that work? Particularly since my TV card is in one machine and my CD writer in another and I would have to do this over a network! Cheers DtG |

09 Apr 02 - 10:49 AM (#686150) Subject: RE: Help: How do I record VCDs? From: Devilmaster I own a ATI All in Wonder 128 card. Older but still does the job well. One of the things I have really gotten into lately is recording from the tv to the Hard Drive. Ati's software has recording software, configurable for different mpeg levels and for avi recording. The biggest thing that you want to know is: How fast is your computer, how big your hard drive is, and what do you want to record. My computer is my entertainment centre. I own a 19" monitor, so I've been working on copying some older stuff from video to mpeg. I use mpeg level 1, settings set for a video cd. Which I believe is 352x240, 1 Mbit/second, sound at 22 Khtz, 16 Bit stereo. This is a fine setting for normal stuff, but it still is a space hog. Recording at that level is roughly 10 megs a minute of hard drive space. There is some visual degredation(blocking, possible skips in a camera pan) If ClintonHammond has the commercial up, I recorded a commercial for our local pub which shows him playing music. Its about 2 meg I think. (can't really remember)Its under the clips section on his webpage here If you are going to record, don't do it directly to cd. Take the extra time and steps to do it to the hard drive. Only because forcing it to go through the netowrk and CD at the same time probably would result in a loss of information being passed. You might have to do a search on the net to find proper recording software, if you don't get some with the TV card. My advice is try the recording of stuff to mpeg first, just various stuff. If you can alter the recording level, try it, play around and see what you come up with. If you need more help, send me a private msg, and i'll see if I can guide you better. steve |

From: Naturally, I just checked, and Clinton doesn't have the commercial up yet. *scowl* Well, if you want, perhaps if you want me to mail something to ya, just as a test to see what the result of it looks like, leave that in the private msg. I didn't really do into it in my last msg, but the reasons you need to know your system, is, how big can you make your files, and how detailed. My system, (P3 500 mhz) has a hard time doing high-end mpeg recording. Anyways, hope that helps. Steve |

From: Devilmaster Clinton has the commercial up on his website, after a little gentle prodding from me. :) You can check out his website here. Or a direct link to the commercial (warning: 2.5 megs) is here. Hope that helps. P.S. Clinton's voice is the one who says 'live celtic folk' in the middle of the commercial and says the final 'the kildare house'. Steve |

From: Mr Red I did save some printed web pages - basically you need to mpeg them (probably mpeg2) and stitch em together in a program like TEmpeg (I have the "a" version that has mpeg2 the later ones had to include royalties to the mpeg cartel) and save it in your favourite VCD riendly burn app like Nero 5. I will dig out the paper and report back if I find it! |
