Leadbelly live album?

Subject: Leadbelly live album? (HELP!)
From:

A couple weeks ago, I heard a local radio station playing Leadbelly. I assume it was an album, because numerous songs were played, one after another. I only caught a couple songs but I think I remember an audience applauding, so I assume it was live. At one point, Leabelly spoke about his experience in jail, and how he had convinced the governor to let him go by playing a song. He was accompanied by a piano, and maybe some brass, and the last song he played was a jazzy 'Goodnight Irene'. I've tried e-mailing the radio station to ask the name of the album, but haven't gotten a response. CAN ANYONE HELP ME FIND THIS ALBUM?!? I really, REALLY want it but I can't seem to find any information about it ANYWHERE! Thanks in advance, Cooper

I have a recording of "Leadbelly's Last Sessions: Volumes 1 & 2". Unfortunately I've packed all my vinyl away and store these things on tape so I don't know the recording label. I'll see if I can dig it up. This is a "sort of" live album. You can often hear other people in the studio joining in or making comments. There's a lot of dialogue after many of the songs and it's pretty much all solo performances. This may be the one you're after.

There isn't any piano or brass in the "Last Sessions". As far as I recall. There is just Ramsey, Marthe Promise, Leadbelly and another person who is a friend of Leadbelly. There is another voice that might be Mrs. Ramsey if there is such a person.

Leadbelly does all the playing and most of the talking--in fact at one point too much. Marthe Promise sings a beautiful spiritual and he doesn't let her finish.

Murray, you're absolutely right. I listened to that tape last night after posting my message. It's only Leadbelly on guitar and yeah, he does talk too much on the recording at times.

This may be completely off the mark but Dr. John just released a live album called "Trippin' Live." The last song on the album is "Goodnight Irene" preceded by a spoken introduction explaining how Leadbelly had been released from prison. It's a very jazzy version with horns and piano is the dominant instrument. It may be what you heard or it may be just a coincidence.

Whoever buys it, please let us know if Leadbelly played with horns.

Art, He won't get a call from me. I am telling a keen vinyl collecting friend about him.

There were some occasions when Moses Ashe recorded Leadbelly with some of the jazz musicians that he used. I have heard a piece with piano and bass. Of course, he plays with Sonny Terry a lot. There might be a folkways album with him together with horns, but I am not sure. I am only familiar with "Where Did you Sleep Last Night" and the "Last Sessions" from them. Neither has any wind instrument.

Lead Belly recorded a live album at the University of Texas in Austin in 1949. The LP was on the Playboy label. I have it on reel-to-reel. There are no horns, but Martha sings with him. He was beginning to show the effects of Lou Gehrig's disease, but his performance is warm and wonderful. Maybe his best album. He makes mention of several things that happened on his recent trip to France in a song about ordering eggs for breakfast. Highly recommended. Monty.
