11 Apr 02 - 01:13 AM (#687643) Subject: Gospel Lovers' Mudcat Fundraiser? From: wysiwyg What do you think.... I have over 500 sound files of gospel tunes (some duplication of songs but probably not many dupes of same song and same artists). Many with lyric files as well. These and all my bookmarks where I find such things will fit on a CD. Would that make a good thank-you gift for people donating to a Mudcat fundraiser? If so, gospel lovers can challenge some other group to raise a bundle. I think I would take the contributions here, deduct costs (no-frills: shipping, blank CDs, and paper CD sleeves) and send all the proceeds to Mudcat, instead of having Max track who had sent in how much. Comments? If we do this, who shall we challenge? Curmudgeons? Trad music lovers? Banjo players? Do we pick a group and challenge them or do we see if someone steps up? (And no, I'm NOT angling for Christians vs. Pagans, especially since so many non-Christians have said they love gospel music!) Who will take the challenge and come up with a creative approach for their side of it? ~Susan |

I'm saving old classic black gospel today. Several hundred, from the 20's forward. Hooee!! ~Susan |

I am ignorant about music technology, though. What do you mean by "sound file"? If I get the CD, what would I be able to do? Actually play real tunes? I hate those MIDI thingies, and there's a lot I don't know about other ways of doing this. Dani |

20 Apr 02 - 10:57 PM (#694662) Subject: RE: Gospel Lovers' Mudcat Fundraiser? From: Uncle Jaque What format are said sound files in, pray tell; MIDI, MP3, regular audio etc.? Are these CD's in data or audio format - or a combination of both? Are there graphics files of sheet - music / scores? Indexes? Sounds interesting to me as well, but I'm a little curious just what sort of stuff is on these CDs. |

20 Apr 02 - 11:21 PM (#694674) Subject: RE: Gospel Lovers' Mudcat Fundraiser? From: wysiwyg These will be singles as MP3's, perhaps some longer items in RealPlayer, and any lyric sheets or text files I have that go with them including my edits or added verses, because the main thing for me is how we use these in worship services. An occasional MIDI. Someday, scans of simple chord arrangements on the lyric sheets, for those we have actually worked up. Look at the recent Max Hunter thread to see sources. (Use forum filter on HUNTER, go back about 14 or 30 days.) This is all stuff you could go surf up yourself.... only you don't have to, because I already did. I will say this now, and I'll probably say it again and hopefully better in a README file included on the CDs: Do not tell me how I SHOULD have organized it... I did it as I went, sometimes tired and late at night when Net traffic permitted, and often with someone else's kids playing all around me, and there is some lack of logic in the filenaming as original filenames were used as possible. You can reorganize it for yourself and pass it on in your own form, as you wish. I did this first and foremost so it would work for me, with my own filenaming and file storage system already in place for our songsheet files. I was not planning this project, it just accumulated in short order. It is what it is, it is not perfect, it is not scholarly, it is not purist, it is not trying to be anything other than some stuff I gathered and am willing to share. I will probably include in the README file a key to some of the filenaming so you can see if the source sites have any additional discographic information. The above is not directed at anyone-- but I am anticipating all sorts of "what you shouldda done"s, and these would really detract from an awareness of the amazing amount of sheer MUSIC that this is! ~Susan |

26 Apr 02 - 03:03 PM (#699231) Subject: RE: Gospel Lovers' Mudcat Fundraiser? From: wysiwyg I sure am learning a lot about how messed up Real Player is as a system for getting and keeping songs from online. Big file conversion process going on, in some cases one song by one. This will mean more control over playlists, but more CDs to carry them, too, as the other formats are much larger files. The organization of them by source is getting lost in the shuffle, too. I have had two kids here for semi-emergecny childcare, a ministry of its own, the whole time I have been working on these. That has left limited brain space! Oh well! The music, I think-- and getting it out there into the hands of people who will SING IT!!!!-- is the point. They will at least be sortable by title, but breaking them up into genres is about out of the question now. Maybe this has been what God wanted all along, I dunno! I do have some text files of the source pages, so it may be possible to figure out where they came from with a little work on the part of recipients. ~Susan |
