Name Our Band!

I started singing with an Irish trad band a few years ago and since then many of you have given me advice on getting over stage fright, singing with loud accompaniment, etc....

Now I have another question.

Our band, which is currently called the Greentop Ramblers, is thinking of changing our name to better reflect the celtic music we play (we think "Ramblers" sounds too bluegrass). We've kicked around ideas ranging from a variation on Greentop Ramblers (Greentop Rovers, Greentop Ceilie Band), a factual description of what we are (the Tuesday Night Living Room Irish Band), picking the name of our favorite tune (Banish Misfortune, Tenpenny Bit) or something in gaelic (anyone know the Irish gaelic for "music and fun" or "a bunch of amatures with lots of enthusiasm" or "music, then beer"?).

Any suggestions are welcome. If we use your idea we'll send you a free copy of our first CD.

Thanks!

Stick to Tuesday Night Living room Irish band. If you use the acronym Tnlrib and throw in an apostrophe or two you can probably convince most people its a Gaelic name anyway!

I agree that "Ramblers" has got to go. I'm not crazy about the "Tuesday Night" idea (too specific – besides, it gives at least a subconscious impression that you won't do weekend gigs).

But if you like the reference to weekday performing, then how about... "Daily Ceili"?

Had a pub band in rehearsal with the working name 'Celtic Crossroads' as we were doing material from Scotland and Wales as well as Ireland. Always liked the name 'Spancil Hill' for a band. 'Sally Gap'(it's a lonely crossroads in the Wicklow Mtns. outside of Dublin) is another I've kicked around. Hope these are helpful. the main thing is to copyright the name asap in case you release a cd.

Varnish Me Foreskin???????????

Ew, who wants to walk around with a varnished foreskin? Sounds awfully crackly to me.

That name could get you some very interesting gigs, though!!!

Can't go wrong with a tune name, I reckon. They often sound interesting and a bit out of the ordinary. I looked at irishtunes.net, and one name struck me -"Scatter the Mud".

But there's absolutely loads to choose from!

Well gee longarm, then don't tell us about it! ;-) But the suggestion to go to my celtic mythology books is a good one.

Thanks for the gaelic, mickey joe. Ceol agus Criac has potential. My Irish phrase book yielded Aris! (Encore!) but not many people would recognize it as gaelic.

I really like Celtic Crossroads jonesy, I almost hate to steal it from you.

And everyone else - may thanks for your suggestions and keep 'em coming.

Hi Susan-Marie, Please, take it! Seems there is/was a 'Spancil Hill' already.(see the 'Where is Spancil Hill?' thread floating around)from New England. While not getting out of the Celtic Music business I 'am' moving to Nashville to pursue my career as a songwriter and wont really need the name, so feel free with my blessing. I'm always coming up with names for projects in which I get involved...some only lasting for 1 performance. Here's a list of some rather dubious ones 'Folkadelic'(funk drummer, bass, acoustic guitar, banjo)we did a funny version of Cream's 'Sunshine of Your Love' with the banjo playing straight bluegrass over P/Funk groove. The drummer had toured with James Brown so you can imagine... 'Cowboy James and the Soul Patrol'(same band...different name) 'Fred Zeppelin'(bluegrass covers of Led Zeppelin songs long before the current pretenders) A friend of mine and I in 1974 used to do a bluegrass version of 'Good Times, Bad Times' with guitar and mando. We called ourselves F.Z. at parties. Currently I've got a party band with my 2 nephews called 'The Fabulous Saddleblasters'(mando, guit.,snare w/brushes)we do covers of some Green Day songs along with other mish mash oldies and country classics...it's really a fun thing. Ok, sorry to have digressed, but you got me thinking...good luck!!

Well gee Suan Marie, 'chuffed' over this side of the pond means pleased(Celtic cockney!) so if you or anybody else wants to use it you are most welcome! Just let me know if you do and I can tell everybody'I named a band'!!!!!

Seeya.

ANyone know of a gaelic equivalent of "Rambler"? Traveler maybe, or Nomad? Hmmmm - Celtic Nomads? I think I'd better go to bed, I'm obviously getting silly.

Jonesy, you sound like you're having a great time - good luck in Nashville.

Tenpenny Bit is already takean - that is Mudcatter Robin's group. Quite some time ago, we had another thread for naming bands. I'll see if I can find it. I think one of my offerings in that thread was:

Gaelic Bread

longarm - Boy is my face red! I should have realized my interpretation of chuffed didn't make sense in context! Sorry.

Alice - thanks for reviving the other thread. I think my band mates are going to be amazed at all the help I've gotten on this.

Taistealai (pr tashtalee) would be the Gaelic for Traveller or Deorai (pr Joe Ree near enough)is emigrant.

Oiche Mhairt (pr ee-ha wawirt) is the Gaelic for Tuesday night but might be difficult for your fans to pronounce.

I've always thought "Many More" or its Gaelic equivalent "Go leoir eile" (pr guh lower ella) would be a good name for a band - this band gets billed for most festivals but never seems to show up and play!

Broom. Re broom the ceiling, an old (Irish ?) Kent County tradition, where a broom is used to beat the ceiling in musical accompanyment. The album covers and titles flow from it.

II agree with LFF..name the band after a fiddle tune. there are thousands to choose from. Just to narrow the field, here are a few that have caught my fancy over the years: "Fasten the Leg in Her";"Squeeze her Thighs";"Slip it in Easy"; "Blue Dick";"The Old Wife Pissed and Paddled in it";"Kiss my Arse";"The Little House under the Hill". (the last one sounds quite polite but its a slang expression for an anatomical part).

I like Declan's "Many More" idea. What's Gaelic for "To Be Announced" and "Too Numerous to Mention"?

Susan-Marie, if you are in America, a word of warning that a gaelic name will 99% of the time be mispronounced and misspelled. Tune names in English are tried and true for good band names (for example, Cherish the Ladies!)... so, go through tune books or online and try out the titles.

Alice makes the point I was trying to make in my post about the Gaelic version of "Banish Misfortune". Not only is there the potential for misspelling and mispronunciation of Gaelic names, but also the potential for misinterpretation!!!
