Lyr Req: Whisky in Jar, Jug of Punch

I'm looking for the lyrics to It's a Beautiful Day Today, done by Moby Grape ~1968 [(click for "Beautiful Day Today)], and Whiskey in the Jar by a British group, ~1971/72. If anyone can help me, I'd appreciate it. I'm new here and am still a bit slow. Thanks.

Socorro, I've serious doubts whether either of these are the "Whiskey in the Jar" to which you refer---they probably aren't best known for being done "by a British group"---but just in case, here they are, in the Digitrad, each *sometimes* known by the title you cite:

The 2nd option given by The Pooka is the song recorded by Thin Lizzy (British group) and was a big hit for them. I would think that's the version you're looking for.

Masato - you're a Wonder & a Scholar, as always. Lord Lord, so many Whiskey Jars, so little time.... :)

C-Flat, ah HA! Thin Lizzy! I stand, or stagger, corrected. Bet that's the One all right. I am abashed to admit that I first learned "Gilgarra Mountain" (aka WITJ) from Peter Paul & Mary! Oh dear. But I think I have it by either the Irish Rovers or the Dubliners, somewhere around the rubble here. / "Whiskey You're the Divil" (aka WITJ) I have by The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem of course. A British group from the County Tipperary. :) Well, except for Makem: a dour Orangeman from the Republic of South Armagh. :)

But now, wot about Socorro's "It's A Beautiful Day" by Moby Grape? Hmmm....

The original version of "Whiskey in the Jar" is "Patrick Flemming" in Scarce Songs 2 at www.erols.com/olsonw. Flemming was executed in Dublin on Apr. 24, 1650.

Nice thread title.
As long as there's whisky in the jar, it must be a beautiful day!

Socorro, yer most welcome; see, that's what Mudcatters do. Well, among other things. :)

Nigel Parsons, threadtitle, yes indeed, It's beautiful day in the neighborhood. (Whiskey on a Sunday...)

What more diversion can a man desire
Than to sit him down by an alehouse fire
Upon his knee, a pretty wench
Aye and on the table, a jug of punch.

--"Jug of Punch"; one of the signature songs of the late great Paddy Clancy, RIP.

Jug of punch, with noticeable differences to both those in the DT. Nicked from the song book of the Bangor Scout and Guide Club (Bangor N.Wales). quoted there as by permission of Essex Music Group. (so I don't know who performed this version.) FWIW

JUG OF PUNCH

As I was sittin' with a jug and spoon,
One fine morn in the month of June,
A birdie sang on an ivy bunch,
And the song he sang was a jug of punch.

Tu-ra-lu-ralu, (3 times)
(repeat last two lines of verse)

What more diversion can a man require,
Than to court his girl by an open fire,
A cherry pippin to crack and crunch,
Aye and on the table a jug of punch.

Even the doctors with all their art
Cannot cure depression of the heart,
Even the cripple forgets his hunch,
When he's safe outside of a jug of punch.

The immortal Gods drink their nectar fine,
And the quality folk drink their claret wine,
I'd give them every grape in the bunch,
Just for a sip from a jug of punch.

And when I'm dead and in my grave,
No costly tombstone shall I crave,
Just lay me down in my native peat,
With a jug of punch at my head and feet.

There're several songs titled "Whiskey in the Jar" (including songs to the tune of it) in the Bodleian Library. One of them, Harding B 15(372a) [Whiskey in the jar ("I am a young fellow that never yet was daunted ...")], was published between 1846 and 1854.

Nigel, I've always heard it as a Kerry pippin, not a cherry pippin, but I don't know if either of them really exist.

Kerry Pippin is an apple variety. Widely grown in Britain (as well as Ireland, I assume) during the 19th Century.

Cheers!

The set of Jug of Punch Nigel quoted was probably from the McPeakes of Belfast, who used that opening line.

Remarkable! Just when a Mudcat LYR REQ thread seems ended, that's when starts getting even better!

O so it's a Kerry Pippin, is it? I'd heard of *Merry* & Pippin (New Zealanders, I think they were :) but now I've learned something. Thanks.

A group called "The Irish Ramblers" in the 60s did a different version of "Whisky [sic] in the Jar." The first verse and chorus went:

As I was a-goin' o'er the Cork and Kerry Mountain
I met with Captain Farrel and his money he was countin'
First I drew my pistol then I rattled forth my rapier
Sayin' "Stand and deliver, for I am your bold deceiver."

CHORUS:
Oh, whack fol de diddle-o, whack fol de diddle-o
There's whisky in the jar [twice, biting down hard on the "r"]

The Ramblers were three brothers from Ireland named Clancy, but they were too late to call themselves the Clancy Brothers or even the Irish Rovers.

Anyone remember them?

M. Savoie, yeah that's approximately the version that I first heard. Three other Clancys?? Jaysus. / Should have named themselves "Beyond the Pale". But I think somebody did take that, later on...

Nigel, shpeakin' o' beyond the pail, yes I'm sure it was only the Beer. Stiff upper lip old chap. Stand and deliver. (Bold deceiver, to be sure.)No, I'm not really Legolas, I admit. Sometimes I'm almost Galadriel. But I blame the stout.

The link that Masato gives above had a GIF file. I'm trying to work through it. This is what I got from that picture. Whiskey In the Jar

I am a young fellow that never yet was daunted And oftentimes had money, but seldom it was wanted. For robbing for gold, it was my own folly, Paying for good liquor to treat deceitful Molly

Chorus Musha ring a ding a____

As I was going over Calvert mountains I met with Captain Rveret, his money he was counting When I drew my pistols, and then I drew my rapier Stand and deliver, for I am your bold deceiver

George - this is what I make out...it looks more like Captain "Brevet" to me - though it could be "Everet"

Oh! when I got his money, it was a pretty penny,
I put it in my pocket and took it home to Molly,
When she swore by what was good, that she never would deceive me,
but the divil take the women, for they never can by easy.

Being both wet and weary, I went to Molly's chamber,
I went to Molly's chamber for to have a slumber,
When she flew unto my pistols and she loaded them with water,
I was dragged ou of my bed just like a lamb to slaughter

I was early next morning, between six and seven,
surrounde by policemen, and likewise Captain Brevet
I fired off my pistols and powder, but was mistaken
I fired of the water and a prisoner I was taken

There's some take delight in fishing and fowling,
whilst others take delight in hearing cannons roaring,
but I take delight in being brisk and jolly
and in paying for good liqour to treat deceitful Molly.

Oh! I have got two brothers, and they are in the army,
One is in Cork, and the other in Killarney,
If I had them here to night, oh, would'nt I make them jolly;
I would rather have them her then you deceitful Molly.

It was early net morning, between six and seven,
It was up against my cell dor the turnkey he was bawling
When I out with my shackles and knocked the turnkey over
And I made my escape out of Fair Philip's Town

Thanks MMario. From what you had, and what I got off that other page, this is what I have now.

Whiskey In the Jar

And oftentimes had money, but seldom it was wanted.
For robbing for gold, it was my own folly,
Paying for good liquor to treat deceitful Molly

But the devil take the women, for they never can be easy.

Being both wet and weary, I went to Molly's chamber,
I went to Molly's chamber for to have a slumber,
When she flew unto my pistols, and she loaded them with -- water,
I was dragged out of my bed just like a lamb to the slaughter.

It was early next morning, between six and seven,
Surrounded by policemen, and likewise Captain Everet
I fired off my pistols and powder but was mistaken,
I fired off the water and a prisoner I was taken.
