OBIT: Damon Knight - RIP

Science fiction fans of all ages will be saddened to hear of the death of Damon Knight. Born in 1922, he was married three times lastly to Kate Wilhelm, herself no mean writer. A highly respected writer, editor and anthologist, one of his first great stories was entitled "To Serve Man" (1950) in which a book which belongs to a group of visiting aliens to Earth is found to be a cook book. In 1965 he founded the Science Fiction Writers of America and became its first President. Sadly missed and now with the rest of the greats like Asimov, Lafferty and so many others.

Asimov died???!!! When??

I still miss Douglas Adams most of all... I was hoping for more Dirk Gently stories...

It is a sad loss, though, in this day when the sci-fi genre seems to be contracting into one long series of Star Trek spin-offs...

Did he?

Wow! I must be either out of the loop, or stuck in some sort of time loop! ;-)

Several? Heh, more like 10, this month. The various sci-fi anthologies with his name in large print on the cover, and even books "based upon a conversation the author had with ISAAC ASIMOV at a party one time," probably confused you. ;)

Ah, and too bad about Mr.Knight. :(

May he be long remembered. I always enjoyed his stories, and Kate Wilhelm's, as well. To Serve Man - *grin*. Sorry to hear of his passing.

Good old Isaac passed away on April 6th 1992. According to the latest information he died from AIDS when he contracted HIV from a contaminated blood transfusion during a by-pass operation in 1983. The illness wasn't diagnosed until two years before his death. Apparently he wanted to reveal he suffered from the condition but in deference to his wife did not do so.

Thanks for the information, Fiolar. I guess I assumed he was still alive because I saw him once on a pbs special, in an interview, and he looked fine.

...Of course, I don't remember how long ago I saw that show, or if it was a rebroadcast even then... ;-)

time is relative, and relatively meaningless when you are a science fiction writer. Ask HG Wells - who is also a little dead.
We still have Aurthur C. He gave us satellites you know - artificial ones that is. Not sure I read any of DK - oh well.
