19 Years of Car Bombs

Today is the anniversary of the very first time anybody carbombed any embassy anywhere. Hezbollah attacked the Beirut Embassy on April 18th, 1983, destroying the building and killing upwards of 60 people, 17 Americans, one baing (having been?) my father. Don't forget that this hasn't all been the Al Quaeda. Wonder why this one is never reported about when the media do their terrorism recaps.

Myrrz, I didn't mean any disrespect at all and I have do feel for your situation as has been discussed before. I find the whole thing sickening and but can only try to imagine how you feel on this day. When I posted before my mind was on only the dark side of why we would want to celebrate this day.......and in my mind was the word "celebrate." Sorry, truly sorry. Please forgive me my rudeness and unthoughtfulness.........You know well how terrorism and the entire thing affects me. My apologies for a poor piece of dark humor.

Pat

I wasn't offended, Spaw! It's been 19 years, after all. I don't exactly CELEBRATE it, but I think about it all day, and I think everybody should. But you can think whatever you want! Did somebody PM you or something? If so, whoever it was, thanks but it's OK.

Sorry about your Dad Mrrzy but I dont think this was a first.

For instance. House of Commons, March 1979 Airey Neave MP, the then shadow Northern Ireland Secretary and a close friend of Tory leader Margaret Thatcher, was killed by an Irish National Liberation Army car bomb in the Commons' car park.

Not quite an embassy I know but the house of commons is a pretty major target. If I felt like digging a little deeper I am sure I could find a non-US embassy or two that had been attacked prior to that date but it would be too depressing.

Remember that the Middle East and Europe have had to put up with this type of terrorism for longer than you have in the USA.

It never gets any easier I'm afraid. Try to make sure that NO terrorists get any support and we may eventualy see the end of it. But I won't hold my breath:-(

Sorry miss hit should read

the "King David Hotel" in Jerusalem 1947 ??

This does not justify any killing. I escaped the IRA bomb in Cannon St Station (London) by a matter of less than the time it took to walk from Platform 6 to the exit in 1980. For once the train was on time.

Sh*t happens, I feel for the victims, and the survivors who have to live with the loss, and the fear.

Thanks chanteyranger. Also, while it has been that long, I didn't mean to imply that it is in any way OK by now that he was killed that way, or even at all. Every day there is something I wish I could discuss or share with him. I miss him all the time. It still SUCKS BIG GREEN DONKEY DICKS. But *I*'m OK, if that makes sense.

The reason I posted this, besides the anniversary, is the fear that Hezbollah is about to be forgiven for everything because we need their help with Al Quaeda. Sorry, just because they haven't done anything LATELY doesn't mean they aren't terrorists.

And then today we get the anniversary of our first home-grown terrorism attack, the only mass killing of Americans of that style NOT perpetrated by religious fanatics. In fact, was Tim McVeigh an atheist or a Christian? Somehow I feel it was one of the two.

Actually, Oklahoma City was not the first instance...before that churches were being blown up....

and in many cases the terror was perpetrated by the state....

I think if it's perpetrated by a state, it isn't terrorism... isn't that war?

not necessarily....wazr was never declared on unarmed civil rights marchers...or on labour strikers....

granted we have not seen things on a regualr basis like in other places of the world....but we have seen our share..

Hmmm. We seem to be creeping into another discussion, but that's OK... When is a bomb a terrorist attack? I would have thought if it's a civilian rather than a soldier detonating it, especially if the target is other civilians rather than military. Thus the attack on the Marine Barracks later in 1983, even though it was a car-bomb, I never considered so much an act of terrorism as an act of war; ditto the Cole bombing. But then again, both of those were perpetrated by civilians, so I guess even by my own definition that would be terrorism, but at least, with the military as a target, it's kind of a more acceptable form of it or something? I'm "thinking out loud" here or whatever the written equivalent is...However, what Sharon's forces are doing/did in Palestine, to me, isn't terrorism, even if they are targeting civilans.

Also, Amergin dear, if they were blowing up churches, it was religious fanatics doing it, so the Murrah building still gets to be first of the non-religious-basis homegrown terrorist acts.
