as promised in the thread,

NOT THE FEILDS ATHENRY
By M.Austen 1993

By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young girl calling
Michael they are singing it again
And it just goes on and on
And I hate that blooming (bloody) song
I'm so fed-up with the fields of Athenry

ch.
Oh no not the fields of Athenry
If I hear it one more time I'm going to cry
They should ban the flaming (bloody) thing
There are far better songs to sing
I'm so fed-up with the fields of Athenry

By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young man calling
Mary why do you think that I'm in here
I hit the singer with my shillelagh
Now I'm bound for old Australie
But no more I'll hear the fields of Athenry

By a lonely harbour wall
I heard a young girl calling
To a prison ship and saying wait for me
Won't you let me come along
Before they start that blooming (bloody) song
I'm so fed up with the fields of Athenry

Thanks Micca. You should come to Upton next month for the parody workshop I'm running with Helen Akitt - I think Malcolm Austen now has a ticket, which Moira bid for in the 7 Stars auction. Plus the Shellbacks are booked...

While you're at it, Micca, would you sing the Hash My Father Scored? Hearing you sing that was one of the single funniest moments of my life. It was my first impression meeting you, and it just got better after that! And it would be a fitting followup.

Hi Dani, good to see you again, If i make it to the Getaway this year, I promise, I will sing both songs just for you!!
I did sing Both songs at Loughstock in Portaferry!!!! and there was much shuffling of feet and hostile noises at the bar when i strted "the Hash", somone at the bar wanted to show his displeasure by punching my lights out, but calmed down as the first verse went on, It was Very well received, as was this one,(Many thanks Malcolm, I owe you a pint!)

Self penned:-
WHEAT & RYE
By a broken down stone wall, I heard an old girl calling
Albert, they have taken you away
Since the sheep they have all gone, thru the post came lots of porn
And the Council Tax you did refuse to pay
CH
Low lie the fields of wheat & rye
Where once we shot small birds up on high
We shot them as they flew, then we put them into a stew
Or else we ate them in a crusty pie

Near a smelly old pig sty, I heard a farm hand crying
Nothing matters Mavis, when you're pissed
The cows have got B.S.E. I've spent the grant from the E.E.C.
And the farmers got his knickers in a twist

Down by the five bar gate, I heard the farmer stating
Albert, I will break you're ruddy neck
The cows have all got out, and the milkmaids up the spout
You've turned my brand new tractor into a wreck

Beside the old dung heap, I saw the policemen creeping
They were searching for my stash I hid nearby
Sniffer dogs were on my trail, I'd soon be heading for jail
It's so lonely hiding in the fields of wheat & rye

Low lie the fields of wheat & rye
Where once we shot small birds up on high
We shot them as they flew, then we put them into a stew
Or else we ate them in a crusty pie

Micca, thanks for posting the author's name for this parody of Fields. The copy Malcolm pointed to, which I rmembered, was posted by Fleetwood, but he didn't have an author's name.

There is also a South London criminal fraternity version 'Low Lie The
Fields Of Peckam Rye' which I have somewhere given by a guy who sang
it at The Middle Bar in Sidmouth a few years ago.If any one is interested I might try and findit.

Call me twisted, but, I love a good parody. Even of a song I dearly love.
