It comes from the parable of the ten virgins, Matthew 25, 1-13. Ten maidens were awaiting the arrival of the bridegroom, and kept their lamps trimmed and burning. The other five did not, and their lamps went out. The bridegroom was delayed and when he finally came, the five foolish virgins had no light. They begged for oil for their lamps from the wise virgins, but were told to go into town and buy their own. In the meantime, the Bridegroom arrived and the five wise virgins were invited in to the wedding reception. The message is that you should always keep your lamps trimmed and burning, because you never known when the bridegroom (Christ) will return.

Hi, Jerry. Because a hymn is associated, I took the Luke 12:35: "...Keep your lamps burning." I couldn't find the spiritual, so I am probably wrong. Could you quote a piece of it?

Our church choir sings this. Here's what I remember of it.

Keep Your Lamps

Part 1:
Keep your lamps trimmed and burning, [x3]
The time is drawing nigh.

Part 2:
Children, don't get weary, [x3] The time is drawing nigh.

If I find my sheet music before someone else posts more, if there is more to the song I'll post that, too.

The song posted by Joe Offer in the thread found by Masato has the form of an old spiritual. It is not listed in the Cleveland Index, at least not under that title.
There seems to be a relationship to a form of "Don't Get Weary," posted by Genie above, but not with the verses in Dett or Allen.
Yes, I would like to see more, Genie, when you get a chance.

Hi, Dicho and all: I heard Reverend Gary Davis do this many times. I'm pretty sure that I have it on a record of his. I'm less sure where the record is...still digging out from our move. I'll see if I can find it... from memory, it's substantially different than the ones posted here..

I posted this in a thread with a misleading title, so I thought I'd post it here with a MIDI and ask Dani a question about the version she sings - a medley of gospel lyrics, all sung to this tune. Dani, what are the lyrics you use, and where did you get them?

Dani, I was sure this was the song you wanted, so I typed it out. Now that I look at your post again, I think maybe it's not the right one, either. This one is in the Jerry Silverman Folk Song Encyclopedia, still available from Hal Leonard:

KEEP YOUR LAMP TRIMMED AND BURNING
traditional

Keep your lamp trimmed and a-burning,
Keep your lamp trimmed and burning
Keep your lamp trimmed and burning
For this old world it is almost gone.
Brother, don't you get a-worried
Brother, don't get worried
Brother, don't get a-worried
For this old world it is almost gone.

Sister, Don't stop prayin'…

Preacher, Don't stop preachin'…

I had the pleasure this evening of listening to Joe Thompson, an old-time fiddle player, play and sing some wonderful music. Two lovely old hymns he sang I'd like to learn. Anyone heard of one that goes something like, "There's oil in my vessel and my lamp is trimmed and burning..."? As beautiful as the tune was, it escaped me the minute I stopped singing it on the way home. If anyone knows a good recording to learn some of these old gospel hymns/spirituals, I'd love to know where to start.

Thanks, Dani

The Lyrics to the song Dani referred to are as follows:
    Chorus
Well I got oil in my vessel
And my lamp's trimmed and burnin'
I wanna be ready when the bridegroom comes.
    (repeat above)

The verses she (Joe Thompson) use are the 1st verse of Amazing Grace, and the 1st verse of Must Jesus Bear the Cross Alone. I also add the 1st verse to the Old Rugged Cross.

Neither she nor I have ever been able to find it anywhere but from Joe Thompson.

"Keep Your Lamp Trimmed And Burning" By Blind Willie Johnson, vocal accompanied by own guitar with Willie B. Harris (a female singer) 78rpm Columbia 14425-D also Vocalion 03022. Recorded Wednesday 5 December 1928, Dallas, Texas. The versions later recorded by Fred McDowell, (for Lomax, Lib of Cong. if I recollect correctly,) owe a great deal to Blind Willies version. The song was already widely known and sung by 1928.

I'm told this song, like a lot of "Negro spirituals," was very much connected to the underground railroad and the desire/hope to escape bondage. This makes a lot of sense to me, considering the lines our choir sings:

Keep your lamps trimmed and burning,
The time is drawing nigh.
...
Children, don't get weary,
The time is drawing nigh.

Those lines could be about being ready for heaven or for the second coming of Christ or about being ready when the right time comes for escaping from the plantation.

There may be another version:

"Give me oil in my lamp;
   Keep me burning.
Give me oil in my lamp, I pray.
   Give me oil in my lamp;
   Keep me burning --
Keep me burning 'til the Judgement Day!"

Been quite a while since I've been around the folks who used to sing this one. I don't remember other verses. Does this ring any bells with anyone else?    Tw
TW, just so we don't get too confused, can we discuss "Give Me Oil In My Lamp" in this thread (click)?

There s no evidence of the song among slaves or African-Americans before 1900. This biblical injunction has been used by many pastors, both white and black.
Perhaps the best known hymn on this subject from the 19th c. is "Lamps Trimmed and Burning," which was written ca. 1890 by Eden R. Latta and Daniel W. Crist. It may have been the inspiration for later versions by African-Americans. The tune is easy and catchy. Midi at Cyberhymnal.

LAMPS TRIMMED AND BURNING

Let your lamps be trimmed and burning,
Lest your feet may go astray!
If you are the Lord's disciple,
Unto sinners show the way.

Refrain:
We'll go out with joy to meet Him,
We'll go out with joy to meet Him,
At the midnight hour;
If our lamps are trimmed and burning,
When He cometh, when He cometh,
At the midnight hour!

Let your lamps be trimmed and burning,
Let there be of oil no lack!
But not like the foolish virgins,
From the entrance driven back!

Let your lamps be trimmed and burning,
Burning for eternity!
Ready for the Lord's appearing,
Whensoever it may be!

Let your lamps be trimmed and burning,
For the midnight draweth near!
When the bridegroom quickly cometh,
And we all His voice shall hear!

Cyberhymnal. Lamps Trimmed
Latta wrote over 1600 songs.

The late great acoustic guitarist John Fahey did an instrumental of "Keep your lamps trimmed and burning on his vinyl album "Old Fashioned Love". As the preacher once said: "Brethren, would you rather be in the dark with the five foolish virgins, or in the light with the five wise ones?"

Or as the comedian Dave Allen said: "Anyone who says a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush was never in a bush with two birds".

In fact, there might be...In her book titled The Life and Travels of Mrs. Nancy Prince, this Afro-American writer wrote these lines: "and when the King shall come, may they have their lamps trimmed and burning" - which seems to be a quote from Fanny Crosby's hymn "When the King Shall Come Again":

"May our lamps be trimmed and burning with a clear and steady light,
That rejoicing we may gather when the King shall come."

FWIW, Joe Thompson, from whom Dani learned "Give Me Oil in My Vessel" is one of the last African American old time country fiddlers around. And we still don't know where he got the song. It probably was sung in the little independent country church to which he belongs...and given that no one has been able to find anything close to it, may have originated in that congregation....at least the melody, since all the verses are from somewhere else.

"Lamps Trimmed and Burning" is in the Cyberhymnal, with midi, linked and quoted above by Q.

"When the King Shall Come" also in Cyberhymnal, with midi: When the King

The website linked by Guest has the copyright date, 1896, and publisher, for "When the King Shall Come," which are on the 'want list' at Cyberhymnal. Many other old hymns are on this website; thanks for the Link, Guest.

I have no doubt that the music of Crosby and Sankey spread to African-American congregations.

The article (and clips) on Joe Thompson linked by Janie is worth reading.
Digressing, In the South, African-Americans were invited to listen at some rural and small town churches. This is another way that popular hymns or phrases from from them would spread.

"Many other old hymns are on this website; thanks for the Link, Guest. "

You're welcome. The only problem about the date mentioned on that website is that N. Prince's book was first published in 1850 (then republished in 1853) so:

1) If it's really that hymn she is quoting in her book, the 1896 date might be a mistake
2) Maybe she's quoting another work, very similar to Crosby's hymn - if so, which one?

As for Joe Thompson: his father and grandfather were musicians, too. According to the Folk Music Performer Index, the 'Lamp Trimmed' spiritual was a family traditional...He might have learned it from his grandfather.

Afro-Americans obviously knew this song way before Latta & Crist wrote their own version.

The paragraphs quoted by Nancy Prince are from a sermon, or the Bible. She seems to have had little knowledge of African-American spirituals or the people who sang them, although she talked with some slaves on her voyage.

I have not found the author of the hymn, "No Hiding Place," which she quotes at the close of her narrative.

"The paragraphs quoted by Nancy Prince are from a sermon, or the Bible."

From a sermon: maybe. From the Bible: I don't think so. The phrasing is exactly the same as in Crosby's hymn (which has a very classic 8-8-8-8 meter) , but not the same as in Luke (12:35) or Matthew (25:1-13) or any other verse mentioning lamps for that matter.

As for her knowledge of A-A spirituals: She lived abroad but she came back and was part of the AME so I guess she was familiar with a lot of hymns & spirituals (which traveled a lot then since it was the Underground Railroad era). One thing is sure: She shows real knowledge of the Psalms...

The "Hiding Place" (also an 8 x 4 meter) quoted is nowhere to be found. I've gathered several versions and verses, most of them derived from Psalm 32 or so it seems. I thought maybe it was one of those versions 'simplified' by Richard Allen.

Seems we've got several different, and probably unrelated, songs going on here.

First time I heard Joe Thompson sing the version I learned from him, he talked about hearing his mother sing it when he was really small, which would have had her learning it early 1900's, if not earlier, as he is 86.

FYI, I received this notice today:

"Triangle Folk Music Society presents a concert by Joe Thompson and The Carolina
Chocolate Drops . Please join us for an evening of traditional Piedmont music performed
by very talented musicians from our area.

Joe Thompson should be regarded as one of the most historically important American
traditional performers active today. A North Carolina native, Joe, at the age of
86, has   upheld and represented a tradition of Afro-American country fiddling now
all but vanished. The Carolina Chocolate Drops (banjo players Rhiannon Giddens
and Dom Flemons, and fiddler Justin Robinson) strive to carry on the Piedmont musical
heritage embodied by Thompson and other musicians. This is a rare opportunity to
hear Piedmont traditional music at its best!"

This version of Keep Your Lamp etc is included in the book "
'Lost Delta Found: A Chronicle of Mississippi Music' by Michele Norris . The book was reviewed on NPR's "All Things Considered, November 24, 2005 ·

"In the summer of 1941, a relatively unknown musicologist from Fisk University in Nashville accompanied the legendary folklorist Alan Lomax on a research trip to the American South.

John Work, an African American trained in classical music, was interested in the musical traditions of rural life. Work and Lomax headed to Coahoma County in the Mississippi Delta -- where they documented the music heard in churches, blues joints and cotton fields.

The oldest person found in Coahoma County was Lucy Adams. A hundred and four years old, blind, and unable to control her memory, she would sit in her rocking chair and entertain herself for hours by singing in an uncertain and quavering voice. Usually she sang only snatches of songs and sometimes she confused one with another. Her favorite was one she said her grandfather had sung:

Mary's the bosom bearer and Jesus is her child
Mary's the bosom bearer and Jesus is her child
Keep your lamp trimmed and burning
Keep your lamp trimmed and burning
For your work's most done.

This is a 'zipper' song. Words to a number of different hymns fit it. the chorus (or refrain, I'm never sure of the difference,) is

Well, I got oil in my vessel and my lamp's trimmed and burnin'

Then, the first verse of "Amazing Grace"

Chorus

The first verse of "Must Jesus Bear His Cross Alone"

And I also add the first verse of "The Old Rugged Cross."

There's a related one that may already be posted somewhere:

One morning, soo-oon.
One morning, soon my Lord.
One morning, soo-oon,
I heard the angels singing.

I live the ambiguity: whether the angels sang recently ("soon"), or are about to sing (soon), or whether they sang: "One morning, soon..."

Can anyone post a non-copyrighted version of the plain hymn on this site? I just received the "African American Heritage Hymnal" today via purchase on the internet and 'Keep Your Lamps...' is NOT in it. Where could it possibly be? All I want is the hymn.

Oddly enough, I ordered some music from 'Sheetmusicplus.com' and they sent me 13 copies of a version of this by mistake.

It's an arrangment by Andre Thomas and is suitable for a choir or quartet. The copyright notice on it says:

"Copyright 1982 by Hinshaw Music Inc. This edition copyright 2003 by Hinshaw Music Inc (with a NC PO box No.) International Copyright secured. Now whether this is just this one arrangement or if it's the whole song, I'm not sure. I would have thought that given the suggested age of this song, it should have come into public domain by now.

There's also a little bit of history from Andre Thomas - he states that the impetus came from a parable in Matthew, Ch 25, v 1-13, the wise and foolish virgins waiting for the bridegroom.

If you would like a copy, Jim in Milwaukee, then join as a member and PM me a postal address and I'll send you one of my spares!

This site might be of some use to you also. It's got a lot of links and some useful books to look out for. Good luck.

I don't think I'd worry too much about copyright on this one, Jim, unless you're going to exactly follow a copyrighted arrangement. Click here for a list of recordings - that's no way anybody could call this one anything but "traditional."

Even if it was found before 1900, I doubt that it would have anything to do with the Underground Railroad. It might mean salvation in a general way, such as soon I will be done with all the troubles of the world, you know, when Christ comes everything will be just fine, that sort of thing.

"I'm told this song, like a lot of "Negro spirituals," was very much connected to the underground railroad and the desire/hope to escape bondage. This makes a lot of sense to me, considering the lines our choir sings:

Keep your lamps trimmed and burning,
The time is drawing nigh.
...
Children, don't get weary,
The time is drawing nigh.

Those lines could be about being ready for heaven or for the second coming of Christ or about being ready when the right time comes for escaping from the plantation."

The trouble with that argument is, as soon as you think 'It's about the underground railroad and getting slaves to freedom' you see it in everything. It's like looking for pagan symbolism in Morris dancing or the face of Jesus in an aubergine... once you start looking, you see false images everywhere.

Now, I'm not saying that this ISN'T a freedom song, it certainly would be appropriate as a preparation for running, but occasionally, given the deeply spiritual life some of these people led, it is just about the Word of God.

Keep your lamps trimmed and burning
Keep your lamps trimmed and burning
Keep your lamps trimmed and burning
For the time is drawing nigh

Soon I will be done with the trouble of the world, the trouble of the world.
Soon, I will be done.
The time is drawing nigh.

Thats not all though, but i gotta go. L8er!

You can find the song your looking for on a CD by the Berge Family Singers from Minnesota. The lyrics stated above others are an old campfire song different from this one. This is a contagious tune

OIL IN MY VESSEL

I've got oil in my vessel, my lamp trimmed and burning
waiting for the bride groom to come (repeat)

Must Jesus bear the cross alone and all the world go free?
No there's a cross for everyone and there's a cross just for me.

(Chorus)

Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wrech like me
I once was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see,

I've got oil in my vessel and my lamp trimmed and burning
waiting for the bride groom to come.

Guest,

Yes, that is the song that Joe Thompson does, and as noted elsewhere in the thread, there is some one else who has posted a performance on YouTube. Thanks for the info. that the Berge Family Singers have also recorded it. Do you know anything about it's origins?

I sang this at my choir performance last night and I believe this is how the first part (without cannon) goes.

Keep your lamps trimmed and burning 3x For this work is almost done.
Children don't get weary 3x For this work is almost done.
Keep your lamps trimmed and burning 3x For this work is almost done.

Then I think we went on to:

Darker midnight lies before us 3x For this work is almost done.
And then it said something about the morning is nearing us but I forgot since I worked all day then went right to sleep. But if you can find the same soong as this with ALL the lyrics please reply! Thanks :D

Keep your lamps trimmed and burnin'
Keep your lamps trimmed and burnin'
Keep your lamps trimmed and burnin'
The time is drawing nigh.

Children don't get weary
Children don't get weary
Children don't get weary
'til your work is done.

Christian journey soon be over

From Sam Charters who visited the late "Blind" Willie Johnson's home and talked to his wife...

"There were over a hundred of the books in an old trunk beside the shack where she lived, or what had been a hundred of them of them before the roaches and rain did their work. The one I bought was the best preserved, Redeemer's Praise, For The Sunday School, Church and Family, by T. C. Okane. It was published by Walden and Stowe, 1881, with words and music for over 500 songs. Much of his material came from these sources."

Gonna put oil in my vessel
Keep the lamp trimmed and burning
Gonna be ready when the bride groom comes

Then other verses stolen from other songs.

This comes from a biblical passage.
Eckhart Tolle has a wonderful interpretation of this.

I have the Joe Thompson recording if you need it.

About four or five years ago, I heard a Gospel Song while driving on Vermont Public Radio. It was a Gospel Song about Oil in a Lamp and it had the song Amazing Grace woven into it. One of the singers in the Southern Gospel Group was Ray Ainsley or Ainslee, I'm not sure of the spelling. It touched my heart deeply. I sing with the Montpelier Community Gospel Choir from Montpelier, VT. John Harrison conducts the choir. I would love to find the version of this song. Perhaps our choir could sing it. Any clues, let me know. Michale B. Estar

It's hard to keep all these lamp oil songs separate. I don't know that we have a good transcription of "Oil in my Vessel," the song that Dani and Janie sing. Here's a YouTube recording of the song by Rani Arbo and Daisy Mayhem:
