Ten maidens were awaiting the arrival of the bridegroom, and kept their lamps trimmed and burning. The other five did not, and their lamps went out. The bridegroom was delayed and when he finally came, the five foolish virgins had no light. They begged for oil for their lamps from the wise virgins, but were told to go into town and buy their own. In the meantime, the Bridegroom arrived and the five wise virgins were invited in to the wedding reception. The message is that you should always keep your lamps trimmed and burning, because you never known when the bridegroom (Christ) will return. Jerry |

I had the pleasure this evening of listening to Joe Thompson, an old-time fiddle player, play and sing some wonderful music. Two lovely old hymns he sang I'd like to learn. Anyone heard of one that goes something like, "There's oil in my vessel and my lamp is trimmed and burning..."? As beautiful as the tune was, it escaped me the minute I stopped singing it on the way home. If anyone knows a good recording to learn some of these old gospel hymns/spirituals, I'd love to know where to start. This makes a lot of sense to me, considering the lines our choir sings: Keep your lamps trimmed and burning, The time is drawing nigh. ... Children, don't get weary, The time is drawing nigh. Those lines could be about being ready for heaven or for the second coming of Christ or about being ready when the right time comes for escaping from the plantation. |

The only problem about the date mentioned on that website is that N. Prince's book was first published in 1850 (then republished in 1853) so: 1) If it's really that hymn she is quoting in her book, the 1896 date might be a mistake 2) Maybe she's quoting another work, very similar to Crosby's hymn - if so, which one? As for Joe Thompson: his father and grandfather were musicians, too. According to the Folk Music Performer Index, the 'Lamp Trimmed' spiritual was a family traditional...He might have learned it from his grandfather. Afro-Americans obviously knew this song way before Latta & Crist wrote their own version. HTH |

From the Bible: I don't think so. The phrasing is exactly the same as in Crosby's hymn (which has a very classic 8-8-8-8 meter) , but not the same as in Luke (12:35) or Matthew (25:1-13) or any other verse mentioning lamps for that matter. As for her knowledge of A-A spirituals: She lived abroad but she came back and was part of the AME so I guess she was familiar with a lot of hymns & spirituals (which traveled a lot then since it was the Underground Railroad era). One thing is sure: She shows real knowledge of the Psalms... The "Hiding Place" (also an 8 x 4 meter) quoted is nowhere to be found. I've gathered several versions and verses, most of them derived from Psalm 32 or so it seems. I thought maybe it was one of those versions 'simplified' by Richard Allen. |

It's an arrangment by Andre Thomas and is suitable for a choir or quartet. The copyright notice on it says: "Copyright 1982 by Hinshaw Music Inc. This edition copyright 2003 by Hinshaw Music Inc (with a NC PO box No.) International Copyright secured. Now whether this is just this one arrangement or if it's the whole song, I'm not sure. I would have thought that given the suggested age of this song, it should have come into public domain by now. There's also a little bit of history from Andre Thomas - he states that the impetus came from a parable in Matthew, Ch 25, v 1-13, the wise and foolish virgins waiting for the bridegroom. It's like looking for pagan symbolism in Morris dancing or the face of Jesus in an aubergine... once you start looking, you see false images everywhere. Now, I'm not saying that this ISN'T a freedom song, it certainly would be appropriate as a preparation for running, but occasionally, given the deeply spiritual life some of these people led, it is just about the Word of God. It was a Gospel Song about Oil in a Lamp and it had the song Amazing Grace woven into it. One of the singers in the Southern Gospel Group was Ray Ainsley or Ainslee, I'm not sure of the spelling. It touched my heart deeply. I sing with the Montpelier Community Gospel Choir from Montpelier, VT. John Harrison conducts the choir. I would love to find the version of this song.
