19 Apr 02 - 01:43 PM (#693807) Subject: Crank my fad? From: AllisonA(Animaterra) In a song obviously meant for dancing, "Chicken in the Fence Post" there are the words:
Crank my fad while I dance, Josie
Any idea what it means? |
19 Apr 02 - 01:53 PM (#693816) Subject: RE: Crank my fad? From: MMario the only definitions of "fad" I can find are "craze" and as and acronym for some sort of enzyme (I don't think it is the second one) So it could mean "encourage my dancing" |
19 Apr 02 - 02:36 PM (#693856) Subject: RE: Crank my fad? From: Amos I have to think you may have somehow misheard the words, Anima. Crank my fan? Fan my crank? It sure don't make much sense, do it??? A |
19 Apr 02 - 02:58 PM (#693885) Subject: RE: Crank my fad? From: AllisonA(Animaterra) It's written in the little Kodaly book, Song Garden, now out of print. Lots of other typos, I wouldn't be surprised if this was one, too! |
19 Apr 02 - 03:05 PM (#693890) Subject: RE: Crank my fad? From: MMario That's the way I found the lyrics on the web too - do a google search for "Crank my fad" and you'll see! |

19 Apr 02 - 03:18 PM (#693898) Subject: RE: Crank my fad? From: Amos Very strange -- the verses call out a series of silly tasks Josie should do for the singer while he dances, such as "chew my gum", "hold my mule", and then "crank my fad". The only cranking I can think of for a young man in a rural setting might be cranking a butter churn or an ice-cream freezer, which doesn't seem to fit, and what the hell is a "fad"? Some Pennsylvania Dutch word not related to fad (craze)?? Anyone got a really old OED out there? A

20 Mar 06 - 11:09 AM (#1698643) Subject: RE: Crank my fad? From: GUEST,ClaireBear Maybe "Crank my Victrola" -- which was sureely a fad when it was intyroduced -- so there would be music to dance to? Another early 20th century "fad" that needed to be cranked was an automobile...so maybe that? When I met him (which was admittedly when he was quite elderly), Jester Hairston did not seem like someone who would insert suggestive OR scatological lyrics into the middle of what otherwise looks like a children's song. 20 Mar 06 - 02:39 PM (#1698873) Subject: RE: Crank my fad? From: Kaleea I am aware of this line in the Kodaly version too, Animaterra. I looked around & found out that Fad could be derived from "fidfad" & asked an elderly friend if she knew what that meant. She laughed & said it's when somebody or somethin' gets all riled up," or when someone is "rather particular." This goes along with some of the info in the various dictionaries. Then, I was just talking to my Turkish nephew who asked me what I was doing. Soooo--he says that he is aware of a term from his part of the world with the root sounding like "fad" which refers to something which sort of pops up or jumps up, & he told me it's sometimes used in an "impolite manner." He was just a bit embarrassed to tell me this! He did a search on the word, "fad" & came up with the term he was referring to as a possible origin for "fad." I could be wrong, but--having seen many commonly sung oldtime lyrics & knowing that they were rather naughty, I'm betting that this naughty may be it & get some folks "riled up." |

21 Mar 06 - 12:22 PM (#1699345) Subject: RE: Crank my fad? From: AllisonA(Animaterra) The Kodaly approach uses traditional music of the country you're teaching in- so Zoltan Kodaly taught Hungarian children Hungarian music, and American teachers who teach the Kodaly music use American traditional music as the foundation of their curriculum. I am not a "Kodaly teacher" but I borrow from the books a lot, as they are excellent resources! "Crank my fad" = "all riled up"- it works for me! Thanks! |
