23 Apr 02 - 01:57 PM (#696645) Subject: Altan song about St. Bridget From: Bearheart Altan was in our town this week for a concert (Athens OH is a small college town and we don't get many Celtic bands here--SIGH!!!) It was of course incredible, and they got a great reception. Hopefully they'll be back. If anyone has been waffling about seeing them this round, don't. Just go. DS sang --I love it when he does, and it's fairly rare that he does, I think-- this beautiful Gaelic song about St. Bridget-- with a great lead-in about the Goddess Bride (SP?) and her reinventing herself as the saint when Ireland became Christian. Anyway it is a gorgeous song, and I don't do Gaelic, so I'd like the words, the tune and a translation if possible. (I didn't notice that they had recorded it on any of the CDs they had for sale... Anyway, I did a quick cut and paste job from the lovely St Brigid's Parish website here: http://read-out.net/cabinteely/tully/hymns.html It has always been my favorite song by Daithi--the album was on Green Linnet, but I'm afraid I don't know much about the availability of it now. |

Donegal. While many hymns are over a 100 years old, most which have survived in Ireland have been composed more recently. As to the CD--I had the chance since yesterday to check the web for it. Green Linnet only has it on cassette. However, Amazon has it one CD for (if I'm remembering correctly) around $22.00!!! Ouch! |

Ó Flannghaile was born in Co Mayo, and was a native speaker of Irish, but he was only about 6 years old when his family moved to Manchester.
