Help: Righting a warping

I was recently given a twenty or so year old "Orlando" guitar (model 301?) which has a pretty bad warp in the neck. The tension rod is quite stiff and I am reluctant to put too much strain on it in case of damaging the threads or, even the guitar neck itself or, even the junction between the neck and body of the guitar. \\\\any one care to advise me, I would like to repair the instrument for my little daughter as it was very well made in Japan. Thanks. beach

Adjustments to the tension rod are usually limited to "fine tuning." If there is a serious warp, I believe that most repair shops would apply heat and tension to "undo" the warp.

While the process is not particularly complicated, it is best done with proper tooling, and benefits from an "experienced hand." Depending on the amount of correction needed, removal of the neck and fingerboard might be needed to prevent damage elsewhere. The necessity for disassemb depends partly on how bad the warp is and partly on what kind of tooling is available to the person doing the repair.

I'm relying mostly on what's in a couple of "how-to" books, supplemented by very minimal experience. If possible, it would be best to get someone with some experience to take a look at it, if possible, to get advice on how serious it is.

I have an Orlando (its name is Tony, of course) and I consider it my "beater" guitar, to take camping or to the beach. I don't think it would be worth your while to put serious repair money into it.

For your daughter, consider a Baby Taylor. Well made, good value, and the right size for a kid.

Cheers,
Michael

Or even a Taylor Big Baby it'll give you room to grow for her. Bob

Many thanks lads!! I shall respect your advice. all of you. The warp is that serious that the note sounded at twelfth frets is not the octave ???

Guest beachcomber:

If your octave fret is that far off, it sounds like your bridge may have been moved. (I don't know how yours is put on, so can't guess how likely that is.)

I'd have to repeat the suggestion that you get someone to take a look at what might need to be done; and if they're knowledgeable enough to identify the problems, they can probably recommend whether it's worth fixing - or at least suggest someone credible to make a $$ estimate.
