Lyr Req: Our House Is a Home (Maurice Soye)

The first line to this Irish song is "There's always a fire in the kitchen." Would like the lyrics. Would also like information on writer and music.

I hope somebody knows this one because all I found were references to it. Apparently Daniel O'Connor's recording is the most popular.

From: Brakn

There's always a fire in the kitchen
There's always a kettle on the boil
There's no fancy carpets or no telephone
But the one thing our house is a home

A stranger is always welcome
Be it any time of night or day
So don't ever feel sad or lonesome
Just call as you pass on your way

There's always a fire in the kitchen
There's always a kettle on the boil
There's no fancy carpets or no telephone
But the one thing our house is a home

It's seen many happy and sad times
But it still remains through it all
Though times may have chaged all around it
There's still a word of welcome in the hall

Thank you, brakn. And an "Add" in the subj. box. See brakn's post above.

Thanks, Sorcha. As you can see, I’ve put the “Lyr Add:” heading where it belongs. --JoeClone, 27-Apr-02.

Any clues about the tune or who composed this song? This might make a nice addition to the "Mansions in the Sky" chapter of my Great Housing Songbook.

Cordially,

I think Kevin Prendergast wrote it. Not totally sure though.

Thanks for the info, Brakn.

Here's a similar one from Malvina Reynolds in exchange:

THIS HOUSE IS YOUR HOUSE
(Words and music by Malvina Reynolds © 1966 by Schroder Music Co. In Muse of Parker Street)

This house is your house;
You can do what you want here;
You can sleep, you can eat,
You can talk or retreat;
You can sing, you can laugh,
And you don't have to ask;
This house is your house.

This house is your house;
You can do what you want here;
You can sprawl in a chair,
Run your hand through my hair,
Read a book, come or go,
Ask me things I don't know;
This house is your house.

This house is your house;
You can do what you want here;
It is cozy and good
And the hod's full of wood;
When you're ready to leave
I will bid you godspeed,
And you know where I keep the key;
This house is your house.

The fourth line of the chorus in the version Brakn posted would make more sense with the word 'is' repeated. Was this just a typo, or did the author write it that way?

"There's always a fire in the kitchen
There's always a kettle on the boil
There's no fancy carpets or no telephone
But the one thing our house is a home"
                    vs.
"But the one thing our house is, is a home."

Got the lyrics to "Our House Is A Home", now I need the guitar chords. I know I'm asking a lot, but I know there is someone out there who can help me. Seem I play a lot of songs in the key of D, however, I would appreciate anything. Many thanks.

Our House is a home was written by my brother Maurice Soye around 1985. We played together for many years and we recorded the song with a four piece group we had at the time, called Aces High. We are from Hillsborough Co.Down Northern Ireland. Daniel indeed recorded it later and has sold over 1 million Tapes, Cd's, Videos and DVD's which have the song included. I have written some songs myself, a few of which can be heard here. www.vincent-soye.com

The chorus uses

G C G C C F C G C

in that order.

Before someone points out that there are a few transition C7ths, yes, I know that, but what you have in the last two posts will get 'er done for you. Best wishes.

This is indeed a great song. Does anyone know who has the copyright?
It's to get permission to quote a verse in the memoirs of a now 83 year old who grew up in Kerry & finds this song very special?

Hi. This is Vincent Soye again and I just want to say it's great to such interest in the "oul" song written by my brother Maurice. In reply to "growing up in Kerry memoirs", the song is published by" New Moon Music" and as such should be credited to Maurice Soye, New Moon Music. Coincidentally, my son is married to a girl Maiden name Miller)from Tralee. If you need any more info let me know.

This song was written by Maurice Soye, a neighbour and friend of our family. Sadly Maurice passed away April 15th.
