From: Janice in NJ I just heard a feature on NPR about fado, the blues-like Portuguese folk music sung in a minor key, often to the accompaniment of a 12-string guitar. I haven't heard fado in more than 25 years, when I used to hear it at some of the immigrant clubs in Newark, New Jersey. I presume fado can be found in any community where there folks hail from the Lusophonic world, such as southern New England. Am I right? |

There is a modern singer called Dulce Pontes who is also good. Would imagine it would be difficult to find but worthwhile if you could locate some venues. |

She was accompanied by one man on the fado guitar and another on the bass. I'm sorry but I can't recall her name. But to answer the question, yes, southern New England is a good place to find fado. |

I heard fado, and Amália, for the first time when I took in a foreign film in the mid-Fifties called "Les Amants du Tage". Amália Rodriguez played herself, and much of the action in the movie (mystery, intrique, fugitives from the law, steamy love scenes [very steamy for the Fifties!]) takes place in a cabaret in Lisbon called "Chez Amália's." She's not a major character in the plot, but she does take part in some of the action. There is a lot of footage of her singing, and the dark melancholy of the music (fado) sets the mood of the whole movie. One of the songs she sang has haunted me for years, the tune playing in my head: a persistent little scale-wise up-and-down run on the double-strung Portuguese guitar and that sweet, dark voice singing Barco Negro (the Black Boat). I have no idea what the words mean, but the song just stuck. A few years ago, a young couple moved into the co-op apartment building my wife and I live in. He's American, she's Portuguese. I ran into her one afternoon as we were picking up our mail and we got to talking. I asked her if she had ever heard of Amália Rodriguez. Oh, yes! In fact, she had several CDs of fado, including one by Amália. She loaned them to me. Can't get them in this country, so Suzanna gave me permission to copy them with my CD burner. I still have her CDs, but when I give them back to her, I'm going to ask her if she'll translate Barco Negro for me. I haven't a clue as to what Amália Rodriguez is singing, but I love the sound of the music and I love her voice. Don Firth |

Several songs haunted me. I wandered in Mexico, asking bored gum-smaking 19-year old women in music stores if they had anything by her (along with other Mexican requests). And then...I finally discovered the truth!! There's a great double CD of her greatest hits - very nice. I have to say that the new Diva, Christina Branco, is absolutely incredible. It's also the arrangements and the musicians that make her CD's so amazing, especially "Corpo Illuminado". But I also really enjoy this very young woman, Mariza, who I think has more the traditional sound, closer to Amalia, and a very impressive voice. There's about nothing more incredible than fado. |

From: ollaimh i play a couple of fado guitarras. in toronto i used to go to a working class pub and accompany several portuguese guys. easy stuff but full of life. they would improvise the lyrics as they went along using old tunes and a set call and refrain style. really lively and living traditional folk tradition. i recently found a giannini fado guitar i would like to date. ts fifties at the lastest according to the previuos owner. anyone know how to date mid century giannini's i have been looking for a carlos parades cd. the records keep showing up on ebay but at soaring prices. is there a cd reissue. i love pedro cabral but the portuguese guys all frown and say parades |
