TECH: Table Tags on the Mudcat

Recently there was a discussion about playing jigs in the clawhammer style on the banjo. I thought I would illustrate my point by drawing up a table using nested tables. I reviewed my handy dandy HTML guide and figured it out all correctly. But when I posted my slick little table, I got this message back that some of my HTML code was invalid. How come?

Because all table tags are no no's here.

If it really does need a table - speak to Jeff/Pene

Personally, I think this 'no tables' policy sucks.

Tables can be really useful and people who know enough HTML to create tables, can normally get it right.

Is there any other reason for banning them?

I'd assumed that it was to do with the fact that incorrectly coded tables would stuff up the entire thread in Netscape.

Can anyone clarify as to why this change was made?

Saying: "Get in touch with Joe or Pene, if you need a table" is a non-starter.

In a forum such as this, a comment made 24 or ever 10 hours late loses its validity.

Pene Azul, Jeri, and I (and the JoeClones, who have varying levels of technical ability) can post tables for you.

Pene made it so Mudcat wouldn't accept tables and some other HTML tags that might cause us problems. We decided that most people didn't need tables in most messages, and it would be easy for us to post tables in those few circumstances where they were needed.

Joe, OK, fair enough. Next time I feel like I need to draw a table to illustrate a point, may I send you a P.M. with the table in it?
