04 May 02 - 09:25 PM (#704504) Subject: RE: Help: autoharps From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca I lucked out. I found a beautiful Schmidt 15 bar autoharp which I bought for $20.00. It was marked at the church rummage sale for $25.00. It's dirty and looks like it sat on someone's shelf for 10 or 15 years. Somewhat out of tune, naturally, but otherwise seems to be in good shape. Had someone's name on the back in black felt marker. I've cleaned most of that off. Still has some there. Going to get a harp key (maybe borrow one from one of my harpie friends), and borrow a tuner from some of my guitar playing friends. Be interesting to hear what it really sounds like. I know several people who have played autoharp. |

02 Jun 09 - 06:24 PM (#2646921) Subject: RE: Help: autoharps From: GUEST,charlie I had a tuning pin break right at the hole for the string. I can't get the pin out of my harp. Does anyone know a good way to do this? This is a new harp, and I'm not that strong, so I assume it was either a bad pin or I twisted it one time too many. Thanks for any assistance. |
02 Jun 09 - 07:18 PM (#2646965) Subject: RE: Help: autoharps From: Bill D If it still has a bit of pin showing, a pair of vise-grips 'ought' to grip it ok...if your strength is not up to it, just get help from a friend. Now...getting a new pin in may be trickier. The threads need to be inserted very carefully and straight. |
02 Jun 09 - 07:29 PM (#2646976) Subject: RE: Help: autoharps From: Darowyn There are thread extractor tools that engineering people know about. They are the sort of people who have the means to drill an accurate hole down the centre of the broken pin and use the extractor to wind it out. People who work on Vintage machinery will be very familiar with the various techniques used. Cheers Dave |

03 Jun 09 - 04:56 PM (#2647676) Subject: RE: Help: autoharps From: GUEST,Dan Schatz sans cookie I second the vise-grips recommendation. That's what I used to do on my old Oscar Schmidt after the chrome tuning pin became stripped. (I ultimately solved the problem by switching to Keith Young custom 'harps.) I also agree that if your autoharp is truly new, and a pin broke, you should try taking it back. If they won't replace the autoharp, they should at least cover the cost of repair. I suspect they'll be more likely to replace the instrument. Dan |

Depending on what you're looking for you can find one for under $100. You could try Craigslist. My experiences have been mixed. But you might get lucky. |
