There are several threads on the song. You might want to check on those threads. The song is also in the DT database. |

05 May 02 - 08:55 AM (#704682) Subject: RE: Query:Cumberland Road? From: Peter T. No, it's an Irish song, about a girl met on the Cumberland Road. The "40 Favourite Songs" album masato refers to is where I heard it (a crummy album by a bunch called "The Boys of the Isle"), but the song has a nice quality to it. It has the sound -- I don't know why, intuition perhaps, of being a modern fake old Irish song of the "Fields of Athenry" genre. yours, Peter T. |
05 May 02 - 02:01 PM (#704799) Subject: RE: Query:Cumberland Road? From: paddymac PeterT. - There has been a good bit of discussion here on "The Fields of Athenry," the gist of which seems to be that the "song" credited to Pete St John is no more than an arrangement with some altered lyrics (primarily the chorus) of a Dublin broadsheet from the 1880s. I did and do like the song, but have no great respect for people who seek to take such material, tweak it a bit, and call it their own. Cheap. |

06 May 02 - 11:19 AM (#705241) Subject: RE: Query:Cumberland Road? From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca paddymac, it was determined in one of those previous threads that Pete St. John IS the author of that song. The ersatz printer named by the person who put up the web-site was proven to not exist. That web-site shouldn't be still active. |

07 May 02 - 05:47 AM (#705781) Subject: RE: Query:Cumberland Road? From: greg stephens I would like to nominate Cumberland (with patriotic pride) as the English county featured most often in song/tune titles. I can think of Cumberland Road, Cumberland Gap, Cumberland Reel( 2 different tunes), Bonny Cumberland, Cumberland Nelly, Canny Old Cumberland, Cumberland March, Cumberland Mountain Bear Chase ( I appreciate some might consider the American and Irish entries cheating, but it's the actual name I'm talking about). But I have a strong feeling Yorkhire and Lancashire could both quite probably match this. Any takers? |
