Tech: trouble w/Contemplator's sites

Subject: tech: trouble w/Contemplator's sites?
From: CapriUni

Hi, Ho!

Until recently, whenever I visited the Contemplator's Child Ballad site, the accompanying midis would play automatically, with the choice offered if you wanted to download the file to your hard drive.

Now, whenever I visit the site, Real Download pops up automatically, and the song won't play until it's on my hard drive...

Has this happened to anyone else? And what could be the reason?

I get a popup,AND the midi plays automatically (it doesn't respondf to the popup controls) AND it frequently won't allow me to change windows until the midi has swung into a repeat.

The embedded midis still play for me, and I wish they wouldn't. Have you allowed RealPlayer to update itself recently? It has a tendency to try to take everything over, and should be dealt with severely. I have forbidden it to touch any file not in its own native formats, but next time it becomes necessary to update the thing I'll probably have to do it all over again. I should forbid it to play midis if I were you, and let your browser's native plugin handle them instead.

I believe Lesley has a contact address at the site. Why not write directly to the source and ask, rather than simply wondering aloud in Mudcat? Most website owners appreciate hearing from users if there is a problem they aren't aware of going on.

CapriUni's problem is unlikely to have anything to do with Lesley's site in particular. As I said, RealPlayer is the most likely culprit.

Try Malcolm's advice. I don't have any problems with this anymore, but as best I remember, about a year ago I had to undo what RealAudio had taken over!

As far as contacting Lesley...you'll notice a new name and a new address which is hard to find on the site. Capri, PM me if you need the address.

PS I personally like the background music, especially on the lyrics pages. I like to read the lyrics as I hear the music. Sure it can get tedious on the other pages, but I spend so much time at that site that I've learned tunes I would normally not have known. If I'm surfing and don't want sound I turn the speakers down.

Another thing, Capri...early on (my early days on the net) I could hear midis at some sites but not others. I downloaded Crescendo which solved everything. That's probably not necessary now. Malcolm or Jon may have been the one who explained to me how to undo the aggressiveness of RA.

I got rid of the up-to-date Real Audio Player I had installed, because it seemed too big for its boots. The older version, RealPlayer 8 Basic seems to be able to do the job without trying to take over.

You can get it from here.

ONE of the problems with RA is that you have to have it for PalTalk. When THEY think you should update, you get an irritating pop-up to remind you. After replying no thank-you to these things for several months, I one day hit the wrong button and it updated for me! I hate having to carefully read all the pop-ups to be sure I hit the right button.

Kinda like Freecell...I had several years of games in the statistics, and then one day hit the delete button!

Also, when I copy and paste to the clipboard, sometimes I hit copy when I mean to hit paste...and lose everything.

I think it was BillD? that said the Mudcat buttons (Submit Message and Clear Entries) should be far apart. I've never been tempted to hit clear entries.

One other question: Anybody else suddenly receive a Casino Gambling program? Because it first appeared when I was at Mudcat I wondered if that was where it found me. Later I saw that it had installed on my computer, and I have no idea where it came from, or when.

Malcolm, you wrote: I should forbid it to play midis if I were you, and let your browser's native plugin handle them instead.

And how do I do that?

Also, checking under the "Real" file, in my Windows Startup list, I found RealDownload Express, with the option to "Disable Browser Watch" would that do it?

McGrath: RealPlayer 8 is the version I have already. But sometimes, I think the programmers work it so that the old versions don't mesh well with newer systems, so you *have* to upgrade ... :::Grrr!!!:::

Mary: So you're a Freecell player too, huh? Addictive, isn't it? ;-)

(carefully clicking Submit)

If Malcolm doesn't walk you through it, I'll look up the old thread where I got the instructions.

My best winning streak in Freecell is 80. John Hardly has over 150 several times! I seem to be getting worse with time, trying to play too fast. But I have lots of strategies. Those statistics keep me honest...I could swear I was doing better than 90%, but... (two or three losses in a row are really hard to make up)

Mary,

If you are using Win '98 or better, choose Game, Select Game and enter -1 in the box.

Try winning that one.

Of course "Ctrl, Shift, F10" then 'Abort' lets you win every game...

I think that the details I gave earlier this year related to Quicktime, but the principal is the same. In this case, open RealPlayer and take this path:

File - Preferences - Upgrade - Media Types - Re-Associate

Uncheck the boxes in the "Re-Associate" menu for any file-types you want RealPlayer to keep its paws off. I have version 8, too, but I seem to have avoided installing RealDownload Express, fortunately. Disabling "Browser Watch" may very well solve your problem; I've disabled most of RealPlayer's automatic features, as they are mostly a bloody nuisance!

I'm with Malcolm. I went over there and had no problems at all. Embedded midi and no pop ups or RP opening at all.

LOL, I'll try those tricks when I mess up my current winning streak! My son tried to cheat, I'll tell him about the cntrl, shift, F10, abort...I think I can turn my computer off when I'm about to lose, not sure. The only thing he could do was to choose the number of the game and alternate between two games. Kinda takes the sport out of it.

Back to RA, seems like I did something different...Maybe just as simple as designating what program to open a file with. I also have the free version, but PalTalk made us update it, and that's when the problems started.

Also, I got so messed up, I think it was Jon that told me how to download Winamp again.

Okay Thanks, Malcolm! I'll try that right now... then, I'll tell you if it worked.

Mary.

I'd be interested to hear about your Freecell stategies.

There's a good 'FAQ' about the game here

Well, just an update:

I checked out Malcolm's advice first, put when I clicked on the File pull-down menu, there was no listing for preferences or anything to associate or reassociate, which was a little argh!-ish. So I disabled RealDownload's "Browser watch", and that disabled RealDownload completely -- and fixed the problem.

I'll just have to remember to re-enable it when I want to download a midi from the DT...

I, too, am interested in Mary's freecell strategies -- but I think that deserves a seperate BS thread...

Sorry; Preferences is under View, not File!

If you want to save a midi to your hard drive you don't need to re-enable RealDownload, just right-click on the link to the file and select "save link as" (Netscape) or "save target as" (IE). That's using PCs; it's different for Macs.

Capri, I looked in the help for "file extensions/ associating with programs." You can tell it to open a midi with another program, RA probably took it over. The problem I had was that I had lost Winamp. Malcolm's way is probably more comprehensive.

I'll post a thread on freecell over at the Annexe. I looked at game #-1 and it looked impossible. Several sites I found on a Google search listed #11982 (or something) impossible. oops...gotta go now

I think it's RealDownload which is the RealProblem generally.

While we're on the subject of the Contemplator, I'd like ot mention that there is a new URL for Barry Taylor's Great Canadian Tunebook. Barry moved to a new site and had less bandwidth, so many of his other MIDI files went to the Contemplator. His newer Canadian Tunebook disappeared a while back, but Mary in Kentucky sent me the URL for the new site, and I updated the link on our Links page.
