Pinecastle Records is offering a CD--apparently a reissue of an LP--called "Ballads and Railroad Songs" which contains Dalhart's HALLELUJAH! THERE'S A RAINBOW IN THE SKY. Sorry, I couldn't find any lyrics or sound samples.

Thanks for the link, Jim!

I have that album on cassette and think I'll pick up the CD. When I was a kid, The Little Green Valley was a familiar song. I'd forgotten all about it until I picked up the Dalhart cassette. I figured my Mother used to sing it, because I knew enough of the song to remember the melody and some of the words. My Mother sang around the house a lot, but she didn't remember the song. I grew up in farm country, so I guess they must have played the song on the local radio station when I was a kid.

Just listened to the tape, and the song is a real kick. That is, if you can get around the exagerated "colored" accent Dalhart and the female singer use. In the Nobody Knows De Troubles Obscene style. I'm on my way off to church (a black church where no one would be caught dead saying "lawdy," so I don't have time to listen to the tape and figure out all of the words. I too would be happy to make a copy of the tape for our Guest. You can e-mail me at geraldrasmussen@sbcglobal.net and give me your mailing address, unless Jim takes care of your request before I do.

Lawdy, we'se all glad to hep you!

Sho nuff!

Echhh!

Jerry

You can hear this at the Internet Archive. My transcription. I have not bothered to use dialect spellings in this transcription, although I’m pretty sure they sing “Lawd”, “chillun”, “hebben”, etc.

HALLELUJAH! THERE'S A RAINBOW IN THE SKY
Words and music by Floyd Thompson and J. E. Guernsey
As recorded by Vernon Dalhart and Adelyne Hood, 1930.

1. Oh, the Lord said to his children: “If weary, come to me.”
I looked up to his heaven and there a sign I see.
I work so hard I’m wishing I never had been born.
That’s why you’ll find me waiting when Gabriel blows his horn.

CHORUS: Oh, morning! (Yes, sister.) I’m going to be free. (Oh, morning!)
Oh, morning! There’ll be a jubilee. (Oh, Lordy!)
Hallelujah! There’s a rainbow in the sky.
Hallelujah! Redemption day and night.
Now sing it, brother, sing it and let your voice be heard.
Yes, and sing in the low voice; sing in the middle voice; sister, sing it way up high.
Oh, hallelujah! There’s a rainbow in the sky.
Hallelujah! It’s there for you and I.
Look up, brother, look up, and look up, sister, way up high.
Oh, hallelujah! There’s a rainbow in the sky.

2. Won’t have to tote no cotton; won’t have to tote no corn.
Won’t have no old alarm clock for to wake me in the morn.
On this earth I done poorly; was always way behind,
But in the rush for heaven I’ll be the first in line. CHORUS
