Pacific Northwest 'Catter Gathers 2002

08 May 02 - 05:39 PM (#706972)
Subject: Pacific Northwest 'Catter Gathers 2002
From: JenEllen

Okay, this is a bit early, but I finally got the nod from the boss-man that the requested weekends are free, and I'm headed out on the road again here soon. Thanks to the NWCatters who so patiently helped me wrangle dates, and to Susan for the info template idea. Both of the weekends below are open, come to one or both, the doors are open and you all can take it from here!!

When: July 13-14 and August 24-25 (and also Homeless' visit in early July is open for gather too)
Where: "Second Chance Ranch" Ellensburg, Washington, USA

In-House Accommodations:
Bed and fold-out in my studio--also has enough floor space for a 3-4 sleeping bags
Main floor couch and floor space for 10
In-house room is all based on 'first call'--arrangements can be made for families too.
For overflow, or folks that would rather, there are a couple of hotels in Ellensburg that can cut a deal for gatherings, just let me know.

Music Spots and Camping:
Picking spots on two patios and wrap around porch, and flat area by garden with room for huge circle. Main floor in house also open for picking space. I'll have some chairs and benches for outside, but if you can manage to bring your own lawnchairs, please do. Vans and truck campers are good. There is also enough ground for tent space--let me know ahead of time so I can be sure to have ground cleared (pure laziness: I don't want to mow any more than I have to!)

Food & Beverage:
Picnic/buffet table and open kitchen for grazing Saturday. I'll provide the pies (natch) and wrangle up a farewell breakfast on Sunday morning. Volunteers/ideas would be great, as well as bagged and block ice for the koi-pond cooler (must be seen to be appreciated).

Other Amenities and Nit-Picky FYI:
Hiking/biking/fishing is all available, and the horseshoe pit is too. If you want to take the rowboat out on the pond, keep in mind I only have 3 adult lifejackets--kids need to have their own.
Kids/pets are okay, with parental/owner knowledge that I have a pretty strict "don't mess with the wildlife" policy. The critters are all nice to watch, but no chasing or pestering is allowed--this is their home.
CARPOOL if you can--even if it's just from Ellensburg--I live in the hills and parking is fairly limited (room for about 10 cars, tops. without the overflow clogging up the road)

Thanks and see y'all soon,
JE

You may want to think about putting in a T1 line for the weekend, Jen, and renting a buncha laptops or sompn. They'll all be wanting to post their raves on the 'Cat!!

What a wonderful weekend it sounds like!! I'm gonna try, too!

Yeah, that was kinda funny. My inital thought when the masses descend on my house is usually: "Oh great, how are we all gonna manage the bathroom?" For a Catter Communal, the thought went straight to: "Will I ever see my computer again??"

Tenters and baggers are just fine, plenty of room. There is also room in the shop for tents and such if it gets too windy (it IS Ellensburg, after all).

Steve, you and Miz J can do as you please. If you are riding out on your bike and want a soft place to land, you've got one waiting for ya (provided you scratch that colt between the ears for Auntie Jen)

Auntie Jen - I think we will bring the pickup - now Janet could change our mind on that - but my guitar won't fit on the bike. I scratched Buster Browns little pointy ears this morning (Janet is NOT fond of the nickname LOL) and he is thrilled to be joining the world. So consider your request a done deal.

Hooray, JenEllen! AT LAST a Mudcat Gathering that isn't light years away from my habitat!

I can make the August date and could drop by on July 14 (Bastille Day) if day visits are OK.

(Having said that, I've gotta go find out where the heck Ellensburg is and how close it is to Seattle [where I'll be on July 13].

I could take one or maybe two riders from Portland for the August date if I don't end up hitching a ride myself.

Oops! If you're having a farewell breakfast Sunday morning, it seems a Sunday day visit on July 14 is out. Two questions:

What time Saturday do you expect the Mudcatters to start gathering?

How far (in time and miles) is it from Seattle to Ellensburg?

You guys really need to visit the Sunny Side more often Ellensburg is right on the interstate, this side of the Cascades -- closer to Seattle than where I live.

Leej: You don't know how right you are. Local thought runs to the fact that it sounds like a mix of "You're a Grand Old Flag" and the fight song from RobinHood Men In Tights.

Genie: Welcome!!!! Of course day visits are okay! I suspect after a night of picking that 'breakfast' won't be anything close to 'early'-- and it was only farewell for the folks that do have to travel back to real life for Monday morning. Now, Seattle is fairly close. I don't know where you'll be, but if you can get the I-5 and then the I-90, it's right on the freeway and less than 100 miles.

Nice listing, Sooz. Here is an altered version for the NWGather:

Sleeping gear: Bags and tents are welcome, and there are two spare beds in the house up for grabs. There is also a 'guest' room (it has a door) for privacy needers. I've got spare sheets and pillows and such, so if you forget your own, no stress.

Cute jammies: The less I know about this, the better.

Warm things to wear: Ellensburg is also known as 'the big windy'...it can get chilly at night, be prepared, but once again, I've got extras.

Towel, washcloth, toiletries: If you are terribly fond of hot water, be sure to get up early *g*

Digital camera: very helpful, mine is a piece of crap (as can be seen in last gathering's photos)

Portable tape player or minidisc recorder: I have a mini-disc, if you want to use it for your own copies, bring spare discs.

Your own folding chair (bring a sunhat)

Whatever day-starter you are addicted to: Sorry, but this is a TEA house. I'll have a coffeemaker and coffee, but if you like it, you'd best be prepared to make it yourself, or lose the lining of your stomach were I to brew it.

Snacky and sandwichy stuff: The plan is buffet-style grazing throughout the day. If you have any favourites or specialities, by all means bring them. Bagged ice, paper goods and tinfoil are good too. ***Be Warned*** My 'good hostess' qualities have been highly overrated. If you are shy, you will more than likely starve to death, and I take no responsibility for that. If you don't see something you want/need, cupboard poking and drawer diving are encouraged.

People who want to go fishing: You catch'em, you clean'em. *bg*

Logging on as guest as I am using the new laptop that belongs to the festival manager for Strawberry Music.I am on the festival grounds doing set-up preparation for the Spring Festival this weekend.

Watching the snow melt( we just got about six inches new today and it kind of slowed things down). We were ahead of schedule so it was a day of rest for us.

I had considered starting a new thread about this but I figured JenEllen wouldn't mind a minor hijacking of her thread.Really just wanted to say hi to everyone and reiterate my pleasure at the upcoming MudGather.Hopefully I will have dried out by then.

My tent collapsed this morning due to the snow load and I had to move the drum set into a cabin for dry-keeping.

Did someone ask about drums at Folk Festivals?

One of these days I would really like to write out what it is like to help set up and run a major music festival, but not tonite.

Have to get up at 6:00 AM to drive to Stockton to pick a 75KW standby generator and do some shopping for the Festival.

It would sure be neat to get Susan out to WA for the Gathering at JenEllen's so I'll pray on that one.

Everyone keep on singing and I'll try to get back on soon.

Hey Jen -- it's still looking good for me AND Dear Hubby to get to the PNCG . . . keep your lil' ol' fingers crossed, awright?

I've picked out some firecracker songs to learn, and I've started on the lil' problem I told you 'bout . . . 40 lbs., Emmylou, Justa Picker, etc. 'Course, if I have to come by myself, at least it looks as if Amos will have the job of being my chaperone (Lord and Ladies, protect me - not!)

And my darlin' OLD Amergin -- if you've still got that cute lil' beard -- count on me pullin' it while I'm there ;-)

All the best, Áine

Sooz, you can show this to Hardi. It seemed to work for Aine's DH.....I'm not sure what the Nor'eastern equivalent is, but the Texan phrase was "melted him like a chocolate chip on a hot Dallas sidewalk".

*************************
Folk Hubbies There comes a time in every wenches life when she feels the need to run away. She doesn't really need to run away, she needs to run amuck!! That's right, enter CAMP RUNAMUCK, that glorious half-way house and day spa for folkie babes on the edge.

CAMP RUNAMUCK is located on the beautiful shores of Indian Lake, in a sleepy little town nestled in the foothills of the Washington Cascades, but that is where the snooze-fest ends, dearest husband-type guys.

CAMP RUNAMUCK offers the most mediocre environment necessary to recharge a folk babe's batteries. The lodgings are passable, the food is tolerable, and with the recent EPA clearance, the lake is finally open for toe-dipping.

CAMP RUNAMUCK's weekend sessions begin the 13th of July, 2002, with a rousing weekend where: "Red-heads Stay for a Song"-- all fees and registration are waived for the female firebrands. Carrot-tops, strawberries, and auburn wild-wimmen, run for free at CAMP RUNAMUCK

Does your folk babe NEED to lose 40 pounds in 8 weeks, sing like EmmyLou and play like JustaPicker to attend? Not just 'No'...as we say at CAMP RUNAMUCK: "HAIL NO!" Your folk babe will be treated to various activities and group relations that will allow her by sheer osmosis to absorb the minimal talents of those around her. Daily doses of Vitamin 'F', found only in large gatherings of similarly afflicted folk babes, will be in great supply, and your folk babe will return to you rejuvenated. In some cases, the sheer lack of sleep has led our clients to believe that they've actually had a nice time!

Why run away when you can RUNAMUCK

There's a line ringing in the back of my mind where the guitar solo comes in on that rasty 60's rock hit "Woolie Bullie"... a strident voice going:

Watchit, now! Watchit, watchit, watchit!!!"

Ah jes' hope that ain't one of them preemonishuns I heard of!! LOL!!

Preemonisha, izzat a Japanese film?

Amos has PMS? (Preemonishus Mentality Spasm)?

LOL, all the boob'ed ones turn simltaneously to hear someone sing, and the horses run off so fast they knock over a mountain. (THAT's why they called knockers! Huh! Ah never knowed dat!)

But FELLAS! Am I the ONLY one who caught Jen talking about GROUP RELATIONS!!!?????? Naw, coutn't be y'all missed THAT, mus' be you jes' thinkin' you hol' us to it when the tahm comes, say "But it wahr in writing, Miz Souzey!"

Do NOT get me started! *G* (send plane fare quick)

Oh and I dunno if I can come to Camp Runamuck. I mean, I may need something a little higher class; I am, after all, an Episcopalian, not to mention a proper pastorwife, but that's not the main thing-- I jes' been to FOLK COLLEGE, I a collij girl now, I all smarted up! Yuh! I got me a .MFed on mah naime! (Yew dirty thing, fer SHAIME! Ah mean Mistress of Folkie Educayshun! What yew think Ah mean!!!?) Ah need a PhD now Ah sure, Phoakie Doc.

Sumbuddy else gonna be the Phoakie Doc? OK, then kin Ah be the nurse!? (No not a WET nurse! Geeze you guys are AWFU'!) Who do we git to examine..... "Look doctor, there is a song impacted in there, we must get it out right away!"

(I can leave the polyester at home, tho, right?)

I have a feeling that impacted songs will be the least of our worries, but in case of dire (and I do mean dire) emergency, the shop table can double as an exam table...LOL

An' jeez Sooz, that was NOT what I meant by 'group relations'....that would be too harsh for the testicular set, eh? Remember, it WAS followed by "absorbing the minimal talents.."...LMAO

BTW, sent you some info via PM, lets see what we can do.

Áine, great to hear you're planning to attend! And Amos, too? Our cup runneth over! [Oh, no! Not another bra allusion!] But how many songs about firecrackers are there? *G*

Glad to know I''ve got company in wanting to lose 40 lb. in 8 weeks (though I take no joy in knowing why you are in that situation). I've gotta do it in 7, though. Ya can't go on a diet during Northwest Folklife Festival. It's against Washington state law.

Amergin, if you show up in drag, I'm sure us broads'd all be willing to chip in to pay your admission fee!

Jen, Daily doses of Vitamin 'F'? I'm trying to guess what the "F" stands for. (I've got it narrowed to 3 options--all of which would be revitalizing.)

I'm gonna have to take myself off the list, I think. I gave serious thought to the "what if" aspect-- what if the money appeared by magic, to fly? I know how I could fit it all together, too-- get airfare from my mom to see her in LA and drive up from there with Amos, and back again, and fly back home out of LA. I could even stay in LA after the gathering to recupe. I had a great time playing with the idea of a gathering AND a road trip there and back with my dear, dear friend Amos. What a time THAT would be! *G*

But the truth is, the trip itself is just out of my reach for sane self-care right now. I think in a year I could do it. See, theoretically, I could do it this year-- but then there are a lot of other things I would NOT be able to do, afterwards, because I'd be recovering.

So thanks for wanting me-- I know you will all have a great time. But I gotta stay home and work on what's in front of me, this year.

(But do make a cardboard cutout from my Mudcat photo so at least my cleavage can be there in absentia! *G* I am sure there is a Mudcat fundraser there of some sort!)

love,

~Susan
