Lyr Req: August is a wicked month

Hi, not sure who I had this by, but it's stuck in my memory - it's the one that goes August is a wicked month, it leaves the lost alone
When autumn comes the season turns
The pain of leaving starts to burn
Reality we start to learn from love in the tall, tall grass / August is a wicked month romances spring and die... something something? Help? The refrain is about love in the tall tall grass, but each verse starts with August is a wicked month - so the title might be love in the tall tall grass, now that I think about it. Thanks in advance...

OK, it's John Hartford and it's on Gentle On My Mind. But I can't find the lyrics anywhere... and it IS called Tall Tall Grass, not August is a wicked month. What's up with y'all, it's been MINUTES already!?! (*BG*)

Sorry, Mrzzy.

I don't have any of the albums the song is on, I don't think. I'll look when I get home tonight and check with Dougie Gauss, though. It is published in this rare book which I also don't have.

"The John Hartford Song Book" was published in 1971 by Glaser Publications, Inc., Nashville.

riverboat annie, I mean harpgirl (sorry , I got confused for a moment) *wink*

"The Tall Tall Grass" is on "Looks at Life," RCA Victor LSP-3687, 1967; and "Gentle on My Mind & Other Originals," RCA LSP-3998, 1968.

Those are out of print, but "Looks at Life + Earthwords and Music" has been reissued as a CD. CDNOW lists it as an import.

I get to post the lyrics, after everyone has had a whole week to beat me to it? I'm amazed, and glad I can help.

From the album Gentle On My Mind:

Now August is a wicked month
Of pleasure yet so bad
Escape from all the hopes and fears
A time to laugh, a time for tears
And run away from the rest of the year
And love in the tall, tall grass.

The August sun's a wicked sun
It tans the cheek and leg
It warms your soul and body and
It stills the tiny voice within
That warns in vain against your sin
And love in the tall, tall grass.

Now August is a wicked month
It leaves the lost alone
A hand outstretched, a fleeting smile
Come hither now and stay awhile
And love will warm this lonely child
Down here in the tall, tall grass.

Now August is a wicked month
Romances spring and die
When autumn comes, the season turns
The pain of leaving starts to burn
Reality we start to learn
From love in the tall, tall grass.

I know what they get up to in August to make it a wicked month - look at all the Taurus people on that other thread! And don't even think about early Geminis....
