From: Little Hawk If any of you are fond of playing chess, I thought I'd let you know that there is a good site for doing so called Instantchess.com Lots of good opponents, and you're playing real people, so they make mistakes, just like you do. Much more fun than playing against a computer. You can preset games to be played under a given time limit, and so on...various different options. - LH |

I had my butt severely kicked about the first 6 games in a row there. But, yeah, there are plenty of hungry lions there waiting to feast on the bones of the unwary. :>} |

From: Dave the Gnome I play a little but I always remember advice given by some TV satirical perfomer (Could have been Richard Stilgoe) Life's too short for Chess... I envy people who can play well and have the patience though - more power to yer elbow!!! Cheers DtG |

My 7 year old niece has started playing in competetive chess matches and I'm sure she'll want to know about this place. I can't play to save my life so I'll avoid the humiliation of a visit myself. |

12 May 02 - 09:55 PM (#709845) Subject: RE: BS: Neat chess playing site... From: Little Hawk Yeah, you quickly find out what a poor chess player you really are when you go there! At least that's my experience, and I thought I was pretty good. The weakest part of my game is underestimating the aggressive powers of pawns, if properly used...and other people keep nailing me with their knights too...so much so that I try to find ways to exhange for their knights as early on in the game as I possibly can. I don't think I will ever be more than a fairly decent mediocre chess player...which among amateurs means people figure you're almost unbeatable, but among pros means you've barely got past learning how the pieces move. Chess is an extraordinary game. As some of you have indicated, however, it is not worth the time and effort that is required to play it seriously. There've gotta be a 1,000 better ways to use up one's valuable time. Still, I play it now and then for some reason. - LH |
