Mediaeval Baebes - whaddya think of them?

19 May 02 - 12:34 PM (#713491)
Subject: Medieval Babes - whaddya think of them?
From: katlaughing

Just heard two women from this group interviewed on NPR, click here, and I have to say they were very entertaining and I liked what I heard of their songs. Have any of you seen them perform or, are any of you familiar with their albums?

I am going to start a related thread about the Sour Grove. They said it was a subtlely bawdy poem written by a Welsh woman.

Thanks,

kat

Rubbish, you would think that at least "intelligent music" would have realised that talent does not equal tits. I have this sort of philosophy every day, with the kids at work. They think that what's between their legs is more important than what's between their ears.

Giok, I don't understand. That is just one of the songs they do and it is based on a poem from medieval times. Also, what do you mean by "intelligent" music? Thanks...kat

I think you're being a bit harsh, all. Try ranking them against the current charts, for example. Are they really as low as you are suggesting?

As usual, I think anything that exposes people to a wider range of music than the standard pop can't be all bad!

I think they're babe-elicious! But certainly not old enough to be mediaeval!

-I- love 'em!

I've got at least one of their CD's (who's name escapes me right now) and a vid of a X-mas Concert they ran on Bravo last year or the year before...

They may not be the best, the most authentic or whatever... But I always half suspect that the people who cry 'foul' of their looks the loudest are jealous!

Sure "talent does not equal tits", but together they are ALWAYS a winning combination!

I don't know much of their music, but what I've heard I liked.

I do however think that marketing themselves as 'Baebes' opens them up for a lot more criticism (deserved or not) than if they'd simply concentrated on the music.

I like the music and the attitude. And there a LOT of them (in number), which I sort of like too. I had a chance to see them at a club in Boston on Beltane Eve and while I missed it (too much work to do), I heard it was great: three costume changes: purple to green to silver...if they come here again I won't miss it I hope!

This ("Cywydd y Cedor") seems to be the poem. Their song is from the last 8 lines. English translation is on the next page.

I heard the same report, Kat, and was thinking of starting this thread... you just beat me to it!!

This was my first exposure to them at all, and being on radio, there was not a flashy costume or tit in sight. It was their talent alone that drew me away from Mudcat so I could sit closer to the radio to listen. So that's gotta be worth sometin'!

I take it, Giok, that you have seen them... are you sure your negative reaction to their unconventional stage show isn't getting in the way of your apreciation of the music? Are there other medieval singing groups that you would recommend instead?

Thanks, Masato! Great Song! (ancient companion to "The Twiddle song", Pr'haps?)

The "Baebes" said, in their interview, that this song was written by a woman... Do we have any evidence that this was in fact the case, and if so, who that might've been?

Whilst I'll admit to a certain amount of bias against them due to the bloody georgeous turn out they do, I must say I'm not that impressed with the music. I find the whole sound over produced and the arrangements don't seem to add to the original songs. It's all a bit fluffy, with a slight tendency towards the bland.

I also find the it a bit strange that the group is described as 9 "baebes". But there is also two further people who actually provide a large part of the musicianship. The only difference is they are, in one case, not female / babelicious and in the other, a damn site older than the rest of the "baebes". Hmmm.

Other than that, if you like that kind of thing, why not? Good luck to them.

I think that Lady P made my point, add to this the fact that RichM thinks they're babe-licious, and Clinton Hammond can't remember the name of their CD, and he owns a copy. It just adds to my impression that they are more wallpaper than content.
Intelligent music is music that provokes thought and admiration. and not a hard-on.

Like Capri-Uni, this was my first time in even hearing anything about this group. I didn't see any of the glitz, tits, or anything else. I *heard* a couple of wimmin having a great time, very articulate, having an intellgent conversation about their music, which they unabashedly claim for being modern, their own compositions, with a medieval twist. They also were unapologetic to the purists who have apparently denigrated them since they first hit the classical music scene in 1998. I would urge anyone who is interested to visit the npr site and listen to the interview. It interested me enough to keep me in the car instead of shopping and enough to come here and see who knew what about them.:-) Oh, and Giok, no offence, but since I was female, last time I checked, I didn't get a hard-on...just had fun listening to some "uppity" wimmin I could relate to.

Thanks ya'll...

My understanding is that they will be doing a N. American tour this year. I don't know where else they will be, but for those of whom Annapolis Maryland is not too far, they have an weekend or 2 with the Maryland Renaissance Festival this year.

I've seen them and I thought they were great. Their album 'Undrentide' was, I also thought, overproduced and overhyped (Classic FM three times a day) but my interest in their music overcame my scepticism I'm glad to say.

The sound they made on stage was excellent, the effects they manged with their voices (there were eleven when I saw them)impressive and the arrangements good. I enjoyed 'Now welcome somer' in the album - it was, if anything, better live - quite hypnotic. But there again, I like harmonies and realise it may not be everybody's cuppa'.

The other thiing that struck me was that they appeared to be enjoying themselves. I'm sure they're well paid and ought to look happy, but it certainly added to the atmosphere of the evening.

Go and see them if you get the chance - develop your eclectic taste buds!

A personal opinion only, I don't like listening to their versions of the music (there are 2 of their CD's at work).

They are very presentable (I'm only mildly jealous), I suppose it's a gimmick, but if it helps'em make a living.....

Well, as mediaeval music goes, it's pretty lame stuff. The arrangements aren't very good, let alone authentic, and the performance is a bit lacklustre - Compare with City Waites, or even Dufay collective who I would normally describe as being a bit limp wristed. Anonymous 4 are much better, although again, not always desperately authentic. You want good early music? Check out ensemble fuer fruher musik Augsburg.

Anyway, medieaval babes were much better when it was just the three of them and they were called miranda sex garden.

I've never had a problem with attractive women entertaining me! As far as the music goes, it's pleasant enough without pressing any buttons and I can't see it stirring up much in the way of strong feelings of like or dislike. I wouldn't rush out to buy it but If it was one my C'D'player I'd listen.

Thanks for posting this, Kat!

Good grief, I listen to NPR all the time, including last Sunday. How did I miss this? And I also note from their web site, if I'm reading it correctly, that they were in Seattle last Tuesday!!!

Authenticity is great in its place, but sometimes it can be a sacred cow. Indeed, were I to be totally without humor and needlessly nit-picky, I could raise an eyebrow at some of the harmonies they use—not that there is anything wrong with fairly lush harmonies, but I don't think that sort of harmony was extant during medieval times—but wotthehell archie wotthehell! They sound great! And the general style and the instrumentation they use evokes a medieval aura. I like 'em!!

Some men just get real nervous around real women.

Ah dear guest, how refreshing it is to hear such finely tuned criticism. It obviously comes from one skilled in the art of dialectics, and with an endless lexicon of words at his command. Obviously you paid great attention to my posting, and found therein the word size, which I had sub conciously slipped into it in a Freudian fashion. Well as they say, size does not matter anyway, what is more important is to keep it tucked away out of sight when in company. Rather than to wear it proudly on your forehead, and betray your lack of intelligence.

Well, I'm listening to M/Babes' Salva Nos CD bought after I caught a glimpse of them on UK TV (think it was Millenium Night?) Honestly? Technically, they are not great enunciators and some of the voices sound rather girls school choir-ish: somewhat 'immature'/ undeveloped -However, it is good to hear vocal individuality: comparing them to Anonymous 4 who are sublime (but so sublime I tend to fall asleep). But, for fun and keep listening to value? I'd have to say (being very low-brow meself despite having Hilliard Ensembles' 'Officium' and Henry's Eight in the next slot on the rack) give me the girls anytime!!! They have energy, are fun and I think like the Bond Girls it's just sour grapes to folks who don't want the rabble getting to know about musical stuff they'd prefer to keep elitist!

No they're not. It's a "my first book" of dead common medieval songs, poorly performed with crappy direction and little enthusiasm. They're not even desperately attractive! Pretty much dead ordinary looking. Fair play to them for selling it though - lots of people seem to like it, then again, lots of people like hooked on classics and richard clayderman...

Mmario...You will miss the Corsairs and the Crimson Pirates if you come any other weekend but Pirate Invasion...but you'll miss the Baebes if you do come then. Decisions can sometimes suck mightily.

I suggest you come both weekends, and if you need a place to stay to keep costs down, let me know. I can, at the very least, hook you up the Baebes weekend. I might even be able to do so Pirate weekend, but the sleeping space will be more at a premium...I have half the Corsairs that weekend.

Lemme know! We'd be happy to have you (and more than just you if you want the space for the Baebes weekend, as I won't have any other guests).
