SHÍL MÉ FÉIN

Ó is nár shíl mé féin ag gabhail a luí dom 'réir,
Go raibh mé slán, is nárbh eagal dom
' sínte síos le cúl buí craobh.
Grá mo chroí agus m'anam í.
Bhí m'aghaidh lena haghaidh 's mo thaobh lena taobh,
's mo lámh mar fhéirín trasna uirthi;
Ach le banú 'n lae ba trua mo scéal,
Mo luí 'mo chreatúr dhonna bhocht.

Nuair a bhí mise óg is beag go leor
'S é bhain mé fúm ins na bealaí seo,
'S 'ach casán réidh ar shiúil mé léi
Gur ghoin go géar an arraing mé.
'S á pógadh a béal mar bhláth sú craobh
'S é bhí gach éinne a bhfaca í,
'S ar a' haonu lá déag ba trua mo scéal
'S go hAontrom siar a cuireadh mé.

Ach dá mbeinn-se thíos, ach níl faraoir,
Ins a' tír ina rugadh mé,
Beadh uaisle a' caoi mo bhás go fíor
Is mo mhuintir féin ag aithrí liom.
Ach, a Mháithrín Dhílis Mhilis Mhín
Agus Ard Rí Naofa a d'fhulaing mé,
'S go bfhuil a' bás go fíor a' gabháil mo chlaoi
Is tigh Eoghain ó Frighil nach mbíonn mo chorp.

Dá mbeadh teachtaire agam a rachadh síos
'S a thiocfadh aníos an aichearra,[aithghiorra]
'S a dhéanadh scíste i mBealach Gaoithe,
Agus bhéarrfainn féin luach an aistir dó,
A thiocfadh 'ríst aníos a' tslí
'S a d'inseodh nach mairfinn-se
Ach cóirigh an tigh ' s mo leabaidh fúm,[faoi mo thaobh]
Nó 's í anocht an oíche dheireanach.

I got the words from Caitlín Ní Dhomhnaill; some minor differences in the sleevenote text of Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill's Gael-Linn recording are noted in brackets. The sleevenotes say that the narrator is Domhnaill Ó Frighil, son of Eoghan of Gaoth Dobhair. Domhnaill went east to County Antrim when he was young, and he married there. On his death bed he thought of his native place nad his old friends. I think these notes are by Aodh Ó Domhnaill of Rann a' Feirste as he says he collected the song in 1936 from Máire John uí Dhubhthaigh as well as more recently from Tríona's aunt Neillí Ní Dhomhnaill.

Ciarili, this is for you. It would be great if you could add ABCs for some of the songs I've been adding. I'll be adding Smaointe also - not today!- and that's got a beautiful air, so please get to work on that one!

Hi!

I found your post of the lyrics to this song. Do you have the translation?
I would love to sing this song but my Irish is not what you would call proficient. :-)

If you do, would you be so kind as to post them to me?

Thanks a million in advance!

Annemarie (Holland)

Triona Ni Dhomhnaill recorded this on her album Triona. It's the only recording I can find of this song, and I didn't have any luck finding a translation. It certainly is a beautiful album.
