21 May 02 - 08:14 PM (#714990) Subject: The Amazing Margaret MacArthur From: Amos We have a member who stays clear of the limelight, and who deserves the limelight mopre than many -- Margaret MacArthur. I was lucky enough to hear from her recently about the Mudcat Sampler CD, and she's sending some tunes for it! But much more important, Margaret (Margmac) MacArthur will be receiving a Life Achievement Award this Friday from the State of Vermont Arts Council. And she's going straight up the Mystic Seaport Festival the next day to play there!! Get lucky and catch her there!! This is a very well-deserved acknowledgement and she deserves waves of congratulations!!

21 May 02 - 08:38 PM (#715002) Subject: RE: The Amazing Margaret MacArthur From: Art Thieme For sure, Margaret has been a monumental figure in the world of folksong and lore---especially in New England and Vermont---for as long as I can recall. I think we first met at the Great River Folk Festival in LaCrosse, Wisconsin and her music and ballads have been important to me ever since. Nobody deserves this lifetime achievement more. I'm excited to know that the good people of her state are doing this to honor her. Ms. Margaret, MANY CONGRATULATIONS !!!!!!!!!! Love, Art Thieme |

22 May 02 - 06:39 PM (#715724) Subject: RE: The Amazing Margaret MacArthur From: DonD Margaret - how benighted I feel, never having heard your name before, and even worse never having heard your voice. I rejoice with you for the honor and the fact that anyone in the folk world receives recognition from outside the folk world. I look forward to being introduced toyou and/or your music somewhere soon. duplicate message deleted by mudelf ;-) |

23 May 02 - 08:36 AM (#716010) Subject: RE: The Amazing Margaret MacArthur From: GUEST,Nancy-Jean Ballard Seigel We have been rewarded these many years by Margaret's singing. The songs themselves have been awards to us-- given through her--from the folklore she took the time, interest and love to discover. Because Margaret has a big heart and has taken this music into the schools as well as to the performing arenas, thousands of people have been exposed to songs which express the varied experiences of life in New England. There is no one person who has given so much as Margaret in this area of our cultural heritage. And, as a bearer of traditions, her performance of any one song is an experience of itself. Margaret, with her experience with that song, goes into the story it tells and stays there in its own world until it's time to come out. She is the carrier of something precious. She takes loving care of her songs. I, in particular, am forever grateful for Margaret's interest and performance of songs from the Helen Hartness Flanders Collection. She is an important bearer of another Vermont legacy. For all this--and her family and her flower gardens--it is wonderful to stop in our tracks for a moment and share the joy of knowing Margaret is receiving this Lifetime Achievement Award. |
