For the last fiew days I have had a coppy of "The rough guide to the music of the Appalachians". Sounds great to me, 'fact it sounds better than great. BUT, is this a true sampeling of Appalachian music singers and players? Some of the performers are fairly well known to me via CDs and records...Peter Rowan, Del McCoury, Ralph Stanley, The Cox Family and Dock Boggs... others including, Claire Lynch and Rhonda Addams are new but welcome to my ears. cheers.

I think everyone would have their own idea of what is a true sampling. There are so many songs and so many players. "Rough Guide" is an honest title, something definitive is not expected.

I haven't seen the Appalachian CD, but I've been quite impressed by the Rough Guide collections from other parts of the world. They're not comprehensive, but they're a nice introduction.
