25 May 02 - 07:49 PM (#717392) Subject: Help: McAfee anti-virus From: Nemesis I'm running Windows 95 and loaded this - couldn't load all of the features, started getting general protection faults, tried to enable the features (e.g.Firewall, etc) then it seized the computer up completely (thought I had a virus actually). Then couldn't get past the Virus scan in Dos mode - so, have opened in SAFE mode and uninstalled it: Hey presto! A computer that works (migod that was scary) A friend is running XP - and couldn't get his copy to load at all .. Anyone else encountered problems? |

25 May 02 - 08:03 PM (#717405) Subject: RE: Help: McAfee anti-virus From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) I have McAfee, the version that updates every other day or so. They notify me and I punch update. It will start out and just hang there. I put it on minimize, at the bottom of the page, and forget it. A few hours later, it shows up again. I go through the same nonsense. Finally, after several hours, it works! Hooray! For a long time it didn't work at all. I made an appointment with their technicians (for a cost of $29.95). I was on the telephone with them for three hours plus (they are in India, by the way). They finally fixed the problems and it loaded and worked. Now, however, I am back to the sometimes yes, sometimes no stage. The Indian technicians said that all the garbage from surfing, all the deleted and wastebasket stuff, etc., was still hanging around and was probably the reason for the trouble. I have just installed McAfee QuickClean (special reduced rate of $19.95) and hope that that will help. All I can do is wish you good luck! |

25 May 02 - 09:28 PM (#717437) Subject: RE: Help: McAfee anti-virus From: JohnInKansas I've never had a problem running McA, but have recently switched all my machinery to Norton simply because it's impossible to "penetrate" the McAfee home page without picking up "13 Tons" of clickies, popups, JavaJunk, and other trash. Email and web surfing are the two places where one most commonly encouters virus problems. I don't open email from unknown senders (or unknown attachments from friends), and I avoid web sites that are full of trash. (I'm reluctant to go to .pbs, and wouldn't touch anything with "Disney" in the name. It takes too long to clean up after you've been there.) If you have enough garbage to interfere with your antivirus program, it's probably affecting everything on the machine, and you need to get regular about deleting "temporary internet files," all cookies (except mudcat, of course), and doing the defrag thing. It really does help. John |
