Hi, for all you DC area Mudcatters - I will be playing at Pat Troy's Ireland's Own in Olde Towne Alexandria every Sunday, June - December. I'd love to meet some of you folks if you drop by. It's a congenial place - friendly and good food. And I promise I won't sing "The Unicorn"! Here's the website if the clicky works: Click here

It looks like a nice pub, Mary. I definitely stop in when I get back that way. Break a leg. vl

Oh, sorry I should have given the time. From around 7:00 pm to 11:00 or 11:30. I've been trying to think of a stage name - when I tell you my real name you'll see why - Mary Smith, and that's the name I play under!

Hey Maryrrf,

That's grand, we'll make it down to see you. What's your middle name? That could be an option. I am in favor of stage names, I think they do make a difference.

We went to a party yesterday that was attended by lots of the Irish performers in the DC area. You would know many of them I'm sure. Susette and I were the only Old Time people there, but I often stop in and do a song or two with these folks, mostly singing high harmony with them, and they like the change of pace our material brings to their sessions. Anyway we were talking about a particular club owner and how ballistic he gets if the sound is a bit loud and one of the players mentioned Pat Troy as having been similiar. But the thing that got me was they had had to give him a set list before the gig and he had told them which songs they could play! I suppose it had to do with politics, I don't know, but anyway, there's a bit of info for you from the musician's grapevine.

I hope the gig goes well and we'll try to get there in June after Mount Airy. regards, Chance

Yeah, Pat doesn't like it to be too loud but it isn't a problem for me with just an acoustic guitar. Sunday evenings are quiet and he pretty much gives me free rein with my repertoire. It's why I particularly enjoy it - I can get away with some nice ballads when things are slow. My middle name is Frances, which I can't stand - so that's not really an option. Maybe I'll have to find husband number three for a name change ????

Ah, the slip of the finger. Mary Frances sounds good to me as a stage name and a bit Irish as well. Anyway sounds like you've got the gig well in hand. All the best. See you when we can. Chance

Mary, Pat Troy is a lovely fella, and a nice venue. I played there during The Christmas Scottish Walk. We live about 3 hours away, or Pat would have had us back in March. I plan to be in the area for the Alexandria Scottish games in July (26th). We will try to hear you on Sunday before we return to Norfolk. Enjoy!!! Heely

Yes, I've been working there off and on since January. Pat's great and the pub's wonderful. That's why I don't mind the two hour drive up from Richmond. Monday mornings are tough, though!

Mary Smith is a perfectly fine real and stage name and you should stick with it.

And what's this set list thing everybody is talking about?

Enjoy your gig.

Yes, Mrrzy if you have a link or more information it might be fun to drive to Charlottesville after work and enjoy a concert. It isn't that far from Richmond.

Mary,
Right my neighborhood ... if you know a few songs of the sea or some sea chanteys there are a few Mudcatters who'd like to renew the Alexandria chantey sings ... we'll join in with the choruses (Celtic Soul see you there ...).
Cheers,
Brian

I like sea chantys but they aren't my specialty. However, you're more than welcome to make a "guest appearance" on stage and lead a couple! The fun thing about the pub is that it's very near a hotel where a lot of tourists/visiting officials/business people stay and you never know who'll walk in. Last time I was there we had about 15 Russian doctors - a group of whom got up on stage and shared some lovely Russian songs with us. Really looking forward to meeting some Mudcatters.

Heya Brian! I'm game...Now, lemme find a weekend I am not gigging myself.

I am thinking Sunday the 23rd, or the last Sunday of the month (the 30th). Any DC area Catters wanna make an event of it?

Maryrrf,

My wife and I frequent the place, and we'll be sure to catch you there. I'm going to remain a mystery guest, so you won't know who I am, unless I come up and ask if I can sing a tune with you. Glad to hear you won't do the Unicorn, by the way.

For all who aren't familiar with Pat Troy's, it's a nice change from the likes of Murphy's up the street, where the drunken Marines just LOVE the Unicorn (and all that other "faux-Irish" crap). Pat's new chef makes a helluva prattie soup and the fish 'n chips are right tasty, too. Can't say much for the house chardonnay, though (it's actually called Fat Bastard).

I think it's more the Friday/Saturday night crowd up at Pat Troy's that like "Unicorn" type songs. Sunday night is usually a nice bunch - very appreciative. There are always plenty of seats and yes, the food there is great and reasonably priced.

Looking at the Pat Troy schedule...Mary, try to get up there one Saturday night to see the guys in Brendan's Voyage; the fiddle player can make time stand still.

Hi Mary. I'm going to performing in Pat Troy's on Sunday, June 2nd from 5:00p.m. until 9. It's a benefit for the LAOH. Hope to see you and some other Catters there. All the best.

Seamus

P.S. I sing the Unicorn. I sing Danny Boy. I sing any goddamn song I feel like singing. Don't let the begrudgers tell you what to sing or what not to sing.

I *am* going to Norfolk tomorrow UB Ed!! :D

Are you asking cuz you're thinking of showing up, or are you confusing the dates I posted with being the current months? If you're coming to Norfolk (strictly speaking, Hampton Roads), let me know.

I will be able to attend Mary's performances on either Sunday June 23rd or Sunday June 30th, when I am not otherwise booked...anyone want to join and make a Mudcat evening of it?

Wow, Seamus, Good thing you posted - Pat Troy hadn't told me anything about that and he had me booked that night. I'll call and see if he wants me to come in later in the evening. I'm glad you said something I know good old Pat can be kind of absent-minded. Oh, I sing the crowd pleasers too if they're requested (haven't learned "The Unicorn" though and it's not on my list of priorities - since there are so many other good songs.) If you're in a pub you've got to go with the flow! I may go up there just to catch your act and maybe do a set afterwards. All the regulars speak very highly of you!

Celtic Soul - I'd be delighted if you brought a group of mudcatters one evening!

I am mixing dates. Looks like you guys are doing the Harborfest in Norfolk next week. Sorry for the confusion.

My schedule is not looking good for that gig or the Pat Troy end of June dates, but I'll keep an eye on it if things change in my world. I really would like to get together with some of you folks.

Ed

Celtic and anybody, I would love to make a Mudcat evening of it on the 23d or 30th.

Anybody else from the Silver Spring/Wheaton/Takoma Park area?

Don't know about June 2, will see how the weekend goes, but I hope we can make it.

Ferrara, I just moved last year from the S.S./Wheaton/Takoma Park area! Still fairly close in NOVA, but I don't think we'll be able to carpool effectively ;D

I'm up for either of the dates mentioned, so pick away, and anyone else local, chime in!

I'd love to meet some of you guys. Where's Mrzy, anyway??? And Wincing Devil? Where are you too?

Mary, glad to help. Sometimes Pat can be a little forgetful. I've never had to submit a set list to him, or any other saloonkeeper for that matter, and he's never told me what to play or not to play - an I was his "House Band" for 13 years or so. Look forward to meeting/jamming with you.

Seamus

Hi, Seamus, Not sure if I'll make it up there or not - it's been a busy weekend so far. I've never had to submit any kind of set list to Pat either. I think he's a heck of a nice guy and I like working for him. If I don't get up there this Sunday I'll catch you at some point. Looking forward to the "mini Mudcat gathering" coming up!

I'm right here, tried to post yesterday but sumthin went out of skew on the treadle...

I'm with Seamus! I love the expected songs, but sometimes it's better to get them over and done with before the crowd gets ugly... (Most of 'em started out pretty unsightly to begin with) ;-) At Flanagan's in Bethesda they get downright belligerent if they don't get And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda in the first set.

June 23rd or 30th sounds good to me! I'll even try to pry SweeteeFace loose and bring her along, but that depends on how smoky it gets...

Wincing Devil

Wincing Devil, Pat Troy's pub is big enough so that it usually doesn't get overly smoky, at least on Sundays when there isn't a huge crowd. There is a non smoking section, as well.
