Another alphabetic quiz

Subject: Another alphabetic quiz
From: IanC

Here's another whole alphabet of (mainly traditional) songs and tunes (once more, I had to cheat a bit on X and Z's getting a bit thin ... any suggestions - PM me).

A - Getting legless in the West Indies; draw near and hear.
B - Following a row, she fears he is some lord.
C - Small avian requiring massive armaments.
D - Him and her, but he won't do a deal so she dies.
E - Sadly murdered, along with Lady Mondegreen.
F - Tim's obituary was premature.
G - Where one loses, another wins; but she was never so poor as to marry for clothes.
H - Mr Garrick thinks both ships and sailors are made of the same material.
I - Married man's lamentation.
J - Liverpool sailor is disappointed; should have married first.
K - Lonely job for a man, no wonder his children are all half-mermaid.
L - Her painful memory may prove rewarding to someone, but he's buried in the ice.
M - Former British prime minister in the forest; what would you do?
N - Keeping these on in bed cannot be said to be entirely polite.
O - Norfolk polka in which the vessel is overturned.
P - Being well past your prime, you must die.
Q - Young men are plenty but, for her, life is more of a card game.
R - Henry Clay's instructions to the guard are often parodied nautically.
S - More than a handful of aristocrats involved in a seaside incident.
T - They shine to her like diamonds bright, but coal would be nearer the mark.
U - Ghost story must be English, it starts with a weather forecast.
V - Romeo and his Juliet as Dickens might have written it, perhaps.
W - This tune sounds like a sylvan orgy.
X - That's all that drink and the devil have allowed to remain.
Y - He came courting the farmer's grey mare, or so the daughter says.
Z - Nonsense words, but the day's just fine.

Answers, as usual, on the forum. The last one took you about 2½ hours and I suspect this may take about the same time. Collaboration strongly encouraged and comments about songs, tunes, performers (or anything else) welcomed.

Good luck. Ian

Well we seem to be ground to a halt. What about this prime minister in the forest. Any Lord Home's in trad songs? I'm flummoxed. Maggie appears in the odd song, but it doesnt seem to lead anywhere. And McMillan begins with an M butdoesnt suggest anything to me. Totally stuck.

With the 'exciseman' I was already in the cheat mode. I didn't know the song but had the 'X-ciseman' idea and searched the DT for songs starting this way.

Still in the cheat mode (doing the search for words without any clue about the song):

G : click (other may want to have fun without cheating)

Just M left, really. Doesn't have to be a song ... think of a tune (though it does have words).

The Prime Minister could be Ramsey MacDonald....

Theres a McDonalds Reel but I couldnt make senseof that with the whole clue, or any Maggie tunes that spring to mind. And I dont know any Macmillan tunes. But reading the clue carefully, the Prime Minister doesnt necessarily start with an M, or the tune for that matter. Itcould be just a word in the tune title. The XVmen were just a reference in the song. Side question for quizzers: what connects clues A and X in this quiz. This is one for you, IanC, but Iexpect you thought of it already while setting the quiz.

28 May 02 - 12:29 PM (#718833)
Subject: RE: BS: Another alphabetic quiz

The tune starts with the Prime Minister's first name (at least that's what I know it as).

;-)

Sorry, didn't notice your question first time ... RLS's pub was, of course, called "The Admiral Benbow".

BTW, I don't know any other name for the song but "15 Men on a Dead Man's Chest" does it have another?

Cheers!
