28 May 02 - 03:38 PM (#718965) Subject: Cleethorpes Folk Festival From: Doug Chadwick Is anyone going to the Cleethorpes Folk Festival this weekend? If so, you may well find me at one of the sing-a-rounds or in the Venture Scouts' snack bar tent on the festival campsite. There's normally plenty of fringe music going on there into the early hours. 19 May 03 - 02:19 PM (#955583) Subject: RE: Cleethorpes Folk Festival From: LesB I didn't have that much fun when I was a scout. On the Argarmeles Clogs Web Site day of dance Southport 27-29 June), the local scouts put on a breakfast on the camp site on the Sat morning (some of them nursing just as bad a hangover as us, having been in the Scoth Piper till about 2am). And then on Sun lunch doing all the teams a B-B-Q at the Scoth Piper to send them on their way. They do a great job for us & raise a bit of money for themselves, & we all benefit. Cheers Les |
19 May 03 - 02:21 PM (#955585) Subject: RE: Cleethorpes Folk Festival From: LesB Of course that should be the Scotch Piper. Les |
20 May 03 - 02:42 AM (#955964) Subject: RE: Cleethorpes Folk Festival From: GUEST Im going. Wild horses couldnt keep me away. They got the Sands Family just for starters. & it would seem that everyone agrees when i say what a lovely festival it is. See you all there! Luv AAA x |
27 May 03 - 04:19 AM (#959613) Subject: Cleethorpes festival. Review. From: GUEST What a wonderful festival it was. Seems to me it gets better every year. First time i ever saw Lindersfarne, absolutely fantastic, as were the Sands Family. Didn't spot (or know if i spotted) any mudcatters though! |
27 May 03 - 05:17 AM (#959622) Subject: RE: Cleethorpes festival. From: smallpiper There were several of us there (although in my case just for yesterday) Bassic played in the folk festival orchestra (the big guy on Cello)and I spotted several other catters around. |
27 May 03 - 08:47 AM (#959693) Subject: RE: Cleethorpes festival. From: Beardy Brid widder & I were there. Singarounds in CBS suite & Willy's plus concerts. Janet sang some Jake Thackray songs. Also Robin Garside was wearing a mudcat t-shirt on Sunday. |
27 May 03 - 10:37 AM (#959761) Subject: RE: Cleethorpes festival. From: GUEST,AAA Wow, i didn't realise that so many Mudcatters there. If anyone was in the floral suite for the folk club on sunday evening then you would have seen me running from the back of the room, to the front & back again sorting out the mics for the artists. I spent the rest of the weekend sat on the pillar at the back of the main hall next the sound deck. Now you say about Robin wearing the mudcat t-shirt i remember noticing it at the time. I also saw the festival orchestra, although i didn't realise that the celloist was a mudcatter. The only mudcatter i know is Colin K. Hopefully i'll meet more people around. Be seeing you around! Luv AAA x |
27 May 03 - 12:14 PM (#959818) Subject: RE: Cleethorpes festival. From: Sooz I thought it was changing its name to the Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher festival! They were on everywhere you looked - deservedly I might add. Bassic certainly looked as if he knew what he was doing as well. Apart from Bill and Dave, Winter Wilson were the highlight for me. They get better and better. |
27 May 03 - 01:42 PM (#959871) Subject: RE: Cleethorpes Folk Festival From: Bassic Dezi Donnelly and Tim Eadie`s Masons Apron on sunday night had 100+ jaws dropping at the sheer virtuosity of their rendition. Actually it was 101, anyone who saw the look of astonishment/concentration/admiration on Tim`s (Guitar) face as Dezi (Fiddle) set off into outer space, fuelled by fatigue (had driven over night from gig in scotland, played lunchtime, session in afternoon, gig in the evening), alcohol and a huge technical facility will never forget it!! Brilliant!! |
27 May 03 - 02:20 PM (#959893) Subject: RE: Cleethorpes Folk Festival From: LesB Yes, I saw Dezi Donnelly & Tim Eadie on Sun night. Brill, I also saw the first 15 mins of them with Michael McGoldrick at lunchtime (we had to go off to dance). It was the first time I have seen Michael McGoldrick, great playing, but I was not impressed by him. I thought he had been to the Liam Gallagher school of charm. To me, he seemed to have a take it or leave it approach to the gig, as though he was just fitting it in between other, better, gigs. Maybe that's just me? I thought they were better without him. It was nice to see Pete Morton doing an impromptu spot, now that guy's got the right attitude, an all round good egg. Cheers Les |
27 May 03 - 03:33 PM (#959958) Subject: RE: Cleethorpes Folk Festival From: Willa I saw Brid Widder, Beardy, Geoff Lawes, Bassic, Rock Chick, and played in the Festival Ordhestra with Robin, who is a 'catter. An excellent w/e. I enjoyed the singarounds; some wonderful voices and a wide range of songs. My favourites? Difficult to decide, but I enjoyed Marie White with Robin Garside, Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher, Flook and Artisan. |
28 May 03 - 02:53 AM (#960268) Subject: RE: Cleethorpes Folk Festival From: GUEST,AAA Les. i know exactly what you mean about Michael McGoldrick. A n Exellent player, but he seems to play for himself rather than the audience, & many people i spoke too said that they also prefered Tim & Dezi without him. Pete Morton I also agree with. That song about the Six Billion Eccentrics still has me in stitches now. I don't suppose anybody knows the lyrics??????? Willa, After my own heart as along with Sands Family & Winter Wilson, all the people/artists you mentioned were my favourites too. More than likely be back on here again soon. Luv AAA x |
28 May 03 - 07:15 AM (#960385) Subject: RE: Cleethorpes Folk Festival From: Alio It was an excellent weekend - although I pulled a tendon at the ceilidh on the Friday night! Apparently I was dancing very enthusiatically! Highlights for us were the Sands Family, Bill Whaley and Dave Fletcher, Marie Little, and the great singarounds. I thiough it was the best guest list they've had for some time. Ali and Geoff |
28 May 03 - 07:26 AM (#960390) Subject: RE: Cleethorpes Folk Festival From: gnomad Another vote for best CFF in several years (and I've been at most of them). Highlight for me was the Whaley/Fletcher bits, I just wonder how long they can go on getting better every time I see them. |

27 May 04 - 05:49 PM (#1195395) Subject: RE: Cleethorpes Folk Festival From: GUEST,jennifer Like I said, how do I get the best out of it? Husband is working, so it's me and the sproglet aged five who is desperate to see John Tams again (though it may be the memory of Sally Tams' chocolate...) so steamy pub sessions don't seem like a good idea... I need to sit and enjoy some good music while he romps in a hippyish way with someone else's enlightened kids. Is this a far fetched dream? I don't want to feel I've been to a folk festival and not really been to one at all... wossthis mini morris then? |
