To avoid thread creep (unforgivable), I've started this thread as a follow on to the 'Any old Iron' thread.
Anyone out there want to 'harvest' this? MMario: here are the words. I have the tune too, if you want it.

Boiled Beef and Carrots
Words and music by Charles Collins and Fred Murray

When I was a nipper, only six months old, my mother and my father too,
They didn't know what to wean me on, they were both in a dreadful stew.
They thought of tripe, they thought of steak, or a little bit of old cod's roe,
Ma said, "Pop round to the old cook shop, I know what'll make him grow:"

Chorus
"Boiled beef and carrots, boiled beef and carrots.
That's the stuff for your 'Darby Kell', makes you fat, and it keeps you well.
Don't live like vegetarians, on food they give to parrots,
From morn till night, blow out your 'kite' on boiled beef and carrots! "

We've got a lodger, he's an artful cove, "I'm very very queer ", he said.
We sent for the doctor, he came round, And he told him to jump in bed.
The poor chap said, "I do feel bad," then my mother with a tear replied,
"What would you like for a 'pick-me-up'?" He jumped out of bed and cried:
Chorus

I am the father of a lovely pair of kiddies, and they're nice fat boys.
They're twins, you can't tell which is which, Like a pair of saveloys.
We had them christened in the week. When the parson put them on his knee,
I said, "As they've got ginger hair, now I want their names to be:
Chorus

nipper young child
blow out your kite have a big meal
saveloy highly seasoned smoked sausage; the addition of saltpetre gives rise
to the bright red colour. Originally a sausage made from pig brains.

Bill Clark (in the UK) has reissued Harry Champion's versions of these old music hall songs on a remastered cd. Harry Champion, CDR3: email bill78@btinternet.com. See http://www.btinternet.com/~bill78/cdissues.htm: Windyridge

OK. Thanks Willa.... Now, as there was usually some sort of logic behind rhyming slang, or the adoption of names into slang (Sweet Fanny Adams, etc) who was Darby Kelly?

ozmacca: derby kell = a portly chest/stomach (belly)
no reference to a particular person, as far as I can find out.

I believe "Derby Kelly" was the Derby of "Derby & Joan" (as in "Derby & Joan Clubs - Clubs for the elderly), although why Derby & Joan I don't know, unless they were somehow famous for being together an exceptionally long time.

Walrus [cue Albert Chevalier, Band strikes up "My Old Dutch"]
"We've been together now, for forty years....."

You can hear Harry Champion sing BOILED BEEF AND CARROTS at The Internet Archive or YouTube.

Here's my transcription. I have boldfaced the words that are different from the version posted above.

BOILED BEEF AND CARROTS
Words and music by Charles Collins and Fred Murray
As sung by Harry Champion, 1910.

1. When I was a nipper only six months old, my mother and my father too,
They didn't know what to wean me on. They were in a dreadful stew.
They thought of tripe, they thought of steak, or a little bit of old cod's roe.
I said, "Pop round to the old cook shop, and I tell you what'll make me grow:"

CHORUS: "Boiled beef and carrots, boiled beef and carrots.
That's the stuff for your 'Darby Kell', makes you fat and it keeps you well.
Don't live like vegetarians on food they give to parrots.
{Blow out your 'kite' from morn till night}* on boiled beef and carrots!"

2. When I got married to Matilda Brown, a funny little girl next door,
We went to Brighton for the week. We both trotted home once more.
My pals all met me in the pub. Said a fella to me, "Wotcha, Fred!
What did you et for your honeymoon?" so just for a lark I said: CHORUS

3. Now, we've got a lodger. He's an artful cove. "I'm very, very queer," he said.
We sent for the doctor. He came round and told him to jump in bed.
The poor chap said, "I do feel bad." Then mother with a tear replied,
Said, "What would you like for a pick-me-up?" He jumped out of bed and cried: CHORUS

4. I ... (?) to be father of a lovely pair of nippers, and they're nice fat boys.
They're twins. You can't tell which is which, like a pair of saveloys.
We had them christened in the week. The parson took 'em on his knee.
I said, "As they've both got ginger hair, I want their names to be: CHORUS

* On repetitions of the chorus, substitute (2) "The wife of mine looks fat and fine" or (4) "Gentiles and Yids**, bring up your kids."

** Did he really say that? On second thought...don't.

"Darby Kelly" was a song by Thomas Dibdin 1771-1841, son of Charles D, included in the Board of Education's National Song Book of 1905.

Begins

My grandsire beat the drum complete
His name was Darby Kelly
No lad so true at rat-tat-too
At rollcall or reveille
