And from me too. Have a great day.

Hope you'll be fit for work tomorrow!

(Speaking of monarchists: someone in our village has decked their house with Union Flag bunting already!)

Gee whiz, just how many Mudcatters have a birthday today?! Seems us Geminis are thick as thieves 'round here. And what better time of year to be born, I ask you!!

Anniversary of the day Charles II hid in the oak tree from the Roundhead troops, thus enabling him to live a bit longer with his head and re-establish the monarchy. We got him in the end though.

Celebrated by the wearing of a sprig of oak leaves with or without oak apple. An oak apple is the hard round ball left by the gall wasp which lays it's eggs in the bark, the wasp larvae lives in this gall until it pupates and flies away out of the tiny hole it makes for the purpose.

Bet you wish you hadn't asked now....

I already *knew* what an oak apple is and how it is formed (also that it is used to make ink, and to dye cloth). Had heard the story of Charles in the oak - but didn't realize when it was or that the anniversary was marked.

Sorry to dumb down, but not everyone is familiar with the British names for these things.

See also the 29th May thread. I can't do blickies, God knows I've tried, but they just won't do it for me.

no-no! I should have added a *grin*! I didn't know the connection between oakapples and Charles - or that it was even celebrated at all.

Micca

I'm not sure I do snig - it was Manitas who started this by adding a post below mine on the "Singing at Chippenham 31May - 3June 2002" thread:

From: Manitas_at_home Date: 27-May-02 - 05:23 PM

I'll be there but none of this sniging lark

so I thought there might be a connection.......

Thanks all for the birthday wishes especially to SharonA for your birthday as well.

Actually I did some snigging at the party I was at on Saturday night. We were comparing versions of the Butcher Boy and I realised I knew a version.
