Lyr Add: Tim, The Dragoon

Subject: Lyr Add: TIM, THE DRAGOON (A T Quiller Couch)
From: Nigel Parsons

With recent threads about regimental songs, I noticed this one is not included. Whether it is folk, I don't know, as it was published first as a poem by A T Quiller Couch ("Q"). But the decision on whether to add it to the DT I leave to others.

TIM, THE DRAGOON. ( A T Quiller Couch ("Q"))

Be aisy an' list to a chune,
That's sung of bowld Tim, the Dragoon,
Sure, 'twas never he'd miss
To be stalin' a kiss,
Or a brace by the light of the moon,
A-roon, a-roon,
Wid a wink at the man in the moon,
A-roon, at the man in the moon

Rest his sowl where the daisies grow thick;
For he's gone from the land of the quick:
But he's still makin' love
To the leddies above,
An' be jabbers! he'll tache 'em the thrick,
A-vick, a-vick,
Niver doubt but he'll tache 'em the thrick,
Niver doubt but he'll tache 'em the thrick!

'Tis by Tim the dear saints'll set sthore,
And 'ull thrate him to whisky galore:
For they've only to sip
But the tip of his lip,
An' bedad! they'll be axin' for more.
Asthore, asthore,
Be the pow'rs, they'll be shoutin' "Ancore,"
Asthore, they'll be shoutin' "Ancore!"

Notes: This was included in Q's "Green Bays: Verses and Parodies" (Methuen & Co.)
The poem was set to music by C Villiers Stanford, (1852 - 1924)
The source of this version is the "Scottish Students' Song Book" 6th edition (Dec 1897) with the permission of Methuen & co.

The music in the songbook (pp. 100-102) seems to be an art song.

Masato: thanks for the info, but I don't know the term "Art Song". However, the contributor notes ibid p356 say that "Dr. Stanford set the song on page 100 specially for this book"

Nigel, art song is defined HERE. "Tim the Dragoon", however, is on the list of Prof's Traditional Music Pages.

Thanks for the definition, I've bookmarked it!
The lyrics @ "Prof's Trad... etc" vary very slightly, and seem almost bereft of punctuation. however, it was not previously available here.
