Not the free ones like Audiogalaxy or ex-Napster, I don't mind paying per song I download. There used to be a site where you could download songs for $.99 each and that was pretty good, but I can't find it anymore nor can I remember the name. There's MP3.com but I was looking for a place where you could download songs off commercial CD's. Of course, I'm looking for a site that has a nice selection of traditional/celtic/folk type stuff. |

But if you do, MAKE SURE your antivirus is up-to-date. I just found 73 instances of two different viruses on a friend's computer - she really likes downloading music, and had no antivirus software. Get AVG antivirus (freeware) if you don't have anything else and can't buy Norton. For downloading music, I recommend kazaa as long as you take the spyware component off it. If you don't know how, try winmx. Morpheus isn't going to last much longer. These are all IMO, except for the virus warning. |

It has a "tab" when you open the program that connects you to the "MusicMatch" website, and offers the option to "convert albums to MP3 for download," although we have never used the feature - so can't vouch for how well/if it works. I'm also unable to immediately identify the site url from within the program - but you should be able to find it with a quick search. The only "interesting" music categories appear to be "blues" and "folk." You have to go fairly deep into the "more listings" tabs to get to anything other than the "pop folk" artist listings, but with patience and perseverence you can get into something besides Burl Ives and Pete Seeger. There doesn't seem to be a separate "Irish" or even "Celtic" category, so the guess would be that they're lumped into "folk." Also don't know if you can access anything on the site without their software - which I believe is in the $25 or $30 range at the local computer shops. (Ours was "free" with the burner.) There's a "click" on the front page for "free music," which would imply that they have an arrangement to "buy" other of what they have listed. Question - "Since I don't know anything about these guys, why post?" I'm wondering too. But maybe someone knows more that I do - and can save us both some trouble???? John |

The downloads nearly never fail as they did with morpheus or napster. The more of you share the more folk music will be available. It's good, fast, and the downloads don't fail. Efolkmusic and Emusic both claim to share profits or revenue 50/50 with the artists. Does anyone have any facts and figures on how much artists get this way versus a conventional CD? From a moral viewpoint, I don't like downloading from Napster-like sites and am much happier from subscription sites. But am I deluding myself? Am I, in practice, still ripping the artists off when compared to buying CDs? Or do the artists actually get more real money per sale, after all the costs of marketing, transport etc etc are deducted? Anyone know? |

I set the profit I make on my CD's, and it gives me a chance to sell "singles" on the net with none of the work or hassle. They split the .99 mp3 downloads 50/50. The name bands are going to do the best with this deal, but they promote all the artists pretty well I think. Best of all, they send payments every month (joy, joy) Robin |

Which has Bonzo buddie removed and the "spyware" . Kazaa works just fine and has introduced me to a number of artists, who's work I want to buy and cant really seem to find. Its a case of just hearing good music. Ie. The Wolftones.. Name after that Irish Rebel Wolf Tone. Not the fabulous Wolftones a rather new band. Too many people are paranoid. Kazaa gives back value as it allows you to exchange music. Rebel

And artists get paid if you even *listen* to one of their songs off the web site. I know one artist that has racked up some serious $$$ from song downloads, plays, and CD sales from MP3. Lately they've added a lot of stuff that revolves around established artists, but you are unlikely to find any free downloads there. Yeah, and there's some real pathetic content, too. But the same goes for any record store... |
