03 Jun 02 - 04:35 PM (#722285) Subject: Vacation suggestions Northeast US? From: Zhenya I'm looking to plan a vacation with a friend sometime in August. I'm in NYC and she's upstate in Binghamton, NY. We're looking for an interesting weekend event/locale no more than a four hour drive from either place. It would be great if this included some type of traditional music event. (but it doesn't have to.) One possibility is the Philadelphia folk festival, but it's not clear yet if we'll both be free that weekend. Does anyone have any other suggestions for intriguing events to attend/places to visit? Thanks. Zhenya |

From: Charley Noble The Champlain Valley Folk Festival near Burlington, VT, in August would seem to be in your search area. Maybe some other folks closer in can provide a link to their website. It's beautiful. Wisht I had a big ol' boat and could anchor offshore with beer and food and cozy sleeping quarters and come ashore for the day in a scow. They have a Greenbriar Boys reuninon again this year. Yellin + Herald + Weissberg (Rinzler being gone). Who else remembers them? I'm going to miss it, I think. The Sweetpea Festival in Bozeman, Mt., appears to want Woodchucks. More later. Peter. |

03 Jun 02 - 05:19 PM (#722323) Subject: RE: BS: Vacation suggestions Northeast US? From: katlaughing Why don't you check out Western MA, esp. Northampton aka noho.com?. It's known as the Five College area, with Smith, UMASS, Amherst, Hampshire and Mt. Holyoke in it or nearby, so it has a lot of stuff going on all of the time. For music stuff, just click here and you'll see over 100 listings of upcoming events in the area. The whole area is full of wonderful campsites, B&B's, eclectic food venues, wonderful shops, although it has become a bit yuppiefied and expensive, and all kinds of neat historical places to visit, including Old Deerfield. When we used to go there, they had an album of songs which included one about an old man who lived there whose philosophy about life was to "have a coffee and doughnut for breakfast" memorialised in one of those songs. As well, Noho itself has the famous Academy of Music where one can see movies, plus Noho also has an old art deco movie theatre, the Calvin, and an arts "cinema" with two screens. Ah, I see Smith College has told it a bit more succinctly than I: Northampton: Smith's Home Town. They have a beautiful botanical gardens, btw. There's lots more, if you are interested, please let me know.:-) Have fun. I loved living there! kat |

04 Jun 02 - 04:49 PM (#723036) Subject: RE: BS: Vacation suggestions Northeast US? From: Zhenya Thanks for these suggestions. I have known about the Champlain Valley Festival, which always looks great. (Especially as a place for me to hear French Canadian music, which I hardly ever get to hear live down here.) I was always under the impression it was simply too far away for a weekend trip, but I never actually checked the time factor. I think I'll get in touch with them and find this out for sure and maybe consider going. And thanks Kat, for all the helpful links! I saved them as favorites and will consider them all. I haven't explored the areas of Massachusetts you mentioned in any detail. Definitely worth looking into! Zhenya
