04 Jun 02 - 12:01 PM (#722826) Subject: Corgi Missing, Where's Ozzie? Big 50th! From: Rick Fielding Dog-gone it that was a pretty good show last night. Granted, a few of the rockers have had pretty extensive facial surgery, so they're looking more like 40 year olds than the pre-pensioners they really are, but the music was certainly interestingly arranged, and the sound crew did a bang up job. I got a feeling that Brian Wilson through that blank stare was really enjoying himself, what with the huge orchestra and many voices. And did anyone notice that they actually had a THERAMIN doing the neat 'whoooooooo whoooos' during "Good Vibrations", when an invisible synth could have reproduced the sound easily. Good for them. Some funny stuff too. The Queen and family trying to look involved, with music that they probably don't understand or even like, along with the young Princes trying to do the same, but for different reasons. In one quick shot though, it looked like Camilla actually WAS grooving! Good for her. A few technical things caught my ear and eye: Sir Paul playing his D-28 COMPLETELY ACOUSTICALLY! Jeez, that was a surprise! I missed Tony Bennett (I guess someone had to be there who actually WAS performing in '52) and Tom Jones. What stuff did they do? And why the Kermit the frog puppet draped over Jones' shoulder at the end? Was there a connection earlier in the show? (didn't look to me like Tom was thrilled by it) Plus one question: Who was the dark haired guitarist on stage a lot playing a white Gibson? He seemed to be in every shot (in the laft hand corner of the TV) and must have some kind of profile, but I didn't recognise him. Any thoughts on the show? Cheers Rick |

From: Peter K (Fionn) I believe Kermit came and went all through the show (most of which I didn't see, because unbeknown to you N Americans the World Cup is underway). No idea why the frog got a ticket. I did catch Tom Jones's glance of unease, but it was a fleeting thrill against the schadenfreude that swamped me when Parkinson met Rod Hull and Emu. The revelry has continued today on yet grander scale - some 5,000 gospel-singers under the direction of Pattie Boulaye, and several more thousand Chicken Shed kids have just gone down the Mall in a spectacular feast of colour. The evident discomfiture of some of those younger Royals may lend support to the view that we are celebrating the end of the monarchy. Long live the republic! |

The Carnival in the Mall they had today looked a lot more fun than what I saw of the concert - it was on the TV in the pub with the volume turned down while we were playing today, and it looked great, with all the Notting Hill floats and that.
I can't say the younger royals looked the least discomfited in any shots I saw of them. No, I can't see a republic for a very long time.
One thing that struck me though was, it was good to see a big event that didn't have any commercial sponsorship in sight, in contrast to the stuff round the Millennium. |

From: Rick Fielding Actually McGrath, one of the things that both Heather and I noted was that it seemed to have a bit of class. I'm not even sure why. Yeah, there was a lot of flag waving....but in a 'muted' kind of way. My guess is the young Royals are getting a lot of practice at NOT looking totally bored. What a skill that must be. I think of that poor old sick and doddering Pope guy being forced to meet and greet everyday, and it practically breaks my heart....no rest for the infallible I guess. There were a few pictures of the concert in the paper this morning, and I've at least been able to identify Ricky Martin (wasn't he famous about three years ago) and Bryan Adams, but the dark haired guy playing the Gibson (Explorer?) is still a mystery to me. Why wasn't RINGO asked to participate? He may have been the only Beatle who was apolitical enough to really WANT a Monarchy. Cheers Rick |

04 Jun 02 - 07:51 PM (#723163) Subject: RE: Corgi Missing, Where's Ozzie? Big 50th! From: McGrath of Harlow I wouldn't call the flag waving "muted" - "animated and jocular" is more how I'd put it.
Dame Edna Everage frequently has as a climax to her appearances in which she had gladioli distributed to the audience, and then on her command they wave their gladdies in the air while a patriotic song is played.
That was very much the feeling with the flag waving, especially at the concert, where it so happened (except that in an event like this it is never "so happened", it's intentional) Dame Edna was on stage to announce the Queens arrival to the concert.
Not that being jokey means it's just a joke. That's something the English know - or at least, most of them seem to. (There are exceptions of course - and one of the most disconcerting things about the Thatcher years is that the country was under the control of one of them.) |

Our Monarchy serves us well an will continue to do so for a long time. The Royals enjoyed themselves and remember Prince Philip is 83, older than most of you folkies.... You Republicans are sad people, you were miserable people before the Jubilee, and now you are doubly miserable after these results which makes me very happy. Fuck off. CBC MAKES ERROR: REVERSES RESULT OF MONARCHY POLL ON FRIDAY BROADCAST - WILL MAKE CORRECTION In his lead-in to the documentary on the Monarchy, Brian Stewart said that the poll the CBC had commissioned showed a dramatic rise in demand for abolition of the Monarchy - from 27% in 94 to 43% today. However, he or his writers had misread the poll and reversed its figures ! The EKOS website - www.ekos.com (for which you need a PDF reader) - reveals that in fact the result is exactly the opposite. If you read the EKOS sheet on the question and the accompanying key to the graphics, you see that the BLACK lines mean DISAGREE - and that in fact the 27-43 increase over eight years is a huge RISE in people DISAGREEING with the statement that the Monarchy should be abolished - people agreeing with the proposition have gone down from 47 to 41. This is born out further by EKos' summary blurb sheet, the last item of which reads "support for abolition is declining." Jonathan Whitten, the Senior Producer, has informed me that the CBC will make a correction tonight or tomorrow night. An accurate reading of the poll is more or less in line with similar positive results for the Crown revealed in the Ipsos/Reid and Compas polls that came out in February |

From: GUEST,Brent from Trent Anti-Monarchists Wheel Out Guillotine for Queen Email this story May 31, 2002 11:07 am EST LONDON (Reuters) - Anti-monarchists equipped with a guillotine are to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee with an "Execute the Queen" street party. The gift from the Movement Against the Monarchy (MA'M) to the Queen is a mock-up of the head-chopper used to kill hundreds of French aristocrats after the French Revolution of 1789, including Queen Marie Antoinette. The idea will make a sharp contrast to the thousands of street parties next week being held to honor the Queen's 50 years on the throne. Organizers of next Tuesday's anti-royal party in London said although most proponents of direct action against the monarchy tended to be anarchists, they did not expect there to be any trouble at the event. "It is obviously light-hearted," said MA'M spokesman Richard Brandon. "Obviously no harm is going to come to the Queen." Elsewhere in Britain, republicans can look forward to a anti-monarchist punk-rock gig in Hereford, western England, and in Scotland anarchic street parties are planned in Glasgow. Anti-royalists in Wales said their three-day extravaganza would be the biggest party around, republican or monarchist. "Stuff the Monarchy" in Wales said it would declare a people's republic in a social club in the town of Pontypridd, south Wales, for the duration of the party starting Sunday.

The 41 Britons from the Movement against the Monarchy had gathered for an "Execute the Queen" street party near the Tower Hill area of central London on Tuesday morning, not far from the route later followed by the 76-year-old Queen in an ornate horse-drawn coach. A Scotland Yard spokesman said the group had been arrested for refusing to co-operate with police by informing officers where they would be demonstrating. More than a million people packed central London on Tuesday waving flags and cheering the queen at the climax of four days of festivities. Police said there had been no other arrests. - REUTERS

I dont claim to be a highly educated person but I am not brainless sir. Our Royal Family is a living symbol of our culture and history. Continuation of the monarchy is vital to our culture and heritage. Since the Empire dissolved and became the commonwealth, we have retained all those multicultural ties with countries that are based on much more than simply shared history. There is a unique relationship within those ties that identifies and links us all through the crown if not by blood. The commonwealth has been a force for good in world politics. We are sharing together a bond that links us that has become a type of love and sharing between nations. I once met a African family in France, and had a great conversation; during which I was refered to as "our commonwealth brother" very touching indeed. |

Firstly, he isn't Oirish, and secondly, he isn't Shane McGowan. Brian May has never played any guitar on stage other than the one he and his dad knocked up with odd bits and pieces in their garage in the early 1970's. Macca was trying to be funny and failed quite miserably, although his comment - 'can we do this again next year' which allegedly generated the reply 'not in my garden' was amusing the first three times I heard it. Yes, the Muppet Show and most of the movies were indeed made in the UK (Pinewood Studios I think?) because the States didn't recognise what a good thing they were onto. As for Maj, she looked like a little girl when she was allowed to light the fireworks...... and Phil the Greek was egging her on! There was a splendid moment when a commentator described Buck House as being covered in 'one enormous golden shower' but I suspect a lot of people missed that...... And yes, it was good to participate in something national for free, unlike the Dome, which wasn't. Had that been free entry I might have gone to see it, but having paid for it once unwillingly (and unwittingly!) through my taxes, I was sure as hell not going to pay again if I didn't REALLY want to see it. The party in the back garden of Buck House was different, although the dress code and list of rules was a little daunting, including things like 'no swearing', 'no alcohol' and 'no digging up the lawn'.... no wonder Ozzy's minder looked miserable, I daresay those rules stretched to the turns as well! Billy Braggs' song was anti monarch/capitalist without really being downright rudely offensive. Pogue ma hoin is, how ever you spell it. And I said Oirish, which is also different. Oirish usually refers to someone who likes to think they are Irish, because way back in the 19th Century, one of their remote ancestors drank the first pint of Guinness imported to Hartlepool or wherever. This entitles them to slag off the British Army/government/monarchy, wear a balaclava and combats, speak in a phoney Oirish accent that stumbles from Belfast nasal to Galway drawl in one sentence (and often one word) and who thinks that St Patrick was the patron saint of extended opening hours.
