Tunes and songs with 'water' references

Subject: Tune titles with 'water' references
From: ruthie-a

Hello! I wondering if anybody could enlighten me a bit: an orchestra I play in is recording a CD later this year, which will be sponsored by a regional water company. Basically, the three of us who are actually folkies are going to press-gang a few others into joining us and putting a set together for the recording, with the slight drawback that at least one of the tune titles needs to have a water reference. I've got a few ideas for tunes that could work plus some good songs that we could arrange a bit, but any suggestions would be very gratefully received - nothing we can think of seems quite right.
Thanks!
Ruthie

I'll put in a plug for some terrific music about the Maroochy River in Queensland, by a great group, Scrub Turkey. Especially "River of Hope".

Sales of this fantastic CD are now into four figures, and tha's not bad, considering I know three of the people who boughtone. Are you listening, fellers, that's another one sold....

Midnight on the Water is a beautiful waltz that's been discussed in these pages at least once. It's also a great song that someone put words to and Kate Wolf sung. And there's Water Song by Jorma Kaukonen which is a fingerstyle guitar piece he recorded with Hot Tuna which might work in an orchestral setting.vl

"Watching the Obi Flow" by Noel Gardner is a good one, but the water company might not like it because it laments the harnessing of a river.

Maybe a tune by Johnny Rivers?
A tribute to Muddy Waters?
Or a tribute to Ethel Waters!!
Flute music of the Creek Indians?
Something by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer?
How about a song by the band "Aleka's Attic" featuring River Phoenix and his sister Rain?
Some new material from singer/songwriter Matt Pond could work.

Just a few thoughts............

Water comes in lots of forms. You might try searches for its variants. E.g.,

Early Mornin' rain
Down By The Old Mill Stream
Snowbird
Steam Heat
Misty
Danger Waters
Icicles, Popsicles
Hail To The Chief*

Cripple Creek
Ripple
Up A Lazy River
How Deep Is The Ocean
Over The Waves
Beyond The Sea
A Foggy Day In London Town
Indian Lake
A Little Bitty Tear Let Me Down

Too many to list. I guess water's pretty ubiquitous in human consciousness.

Genie

*Sorry 'bout that.

Screwed up the boldface, so here's a slightly modified list:

Steam Heat Misty
By TheWaters Of Babylon
Icicles, Popsicles
Hail Columbia*
Cripple Creek
Ripple
Swanee River
How Deep Is The Ocean
Catch A Wave
Sea Cruise
Foggy, Foggy Dew
Indian Lake
A Little Bitty Tear Let Me Down
Over the Rainbow
Three Coins In The Fountain
Moonlight Bay

Oh, I give up! I had but the HTML codes for boldface around the words
Steam
Mist
Waters
Icicles
Hail
Creek
Ripple
River
Ocean
Wave
Sea
Fog
Dew
Lake
Tear
Rainbow
Fountain
Bay
But I probably left out one of the HTML codes, so the whole thing ended up bold.

There's a song called The Well of Spring Water as sung by Co Clare whistle player Micho Russell (R.I.P). Also a lot of Irish dance tunes e.g Going to the well for water, Out on the ocean, The ship at full sail.

If you can get your hands on a CD made to benefit the Doolin Sea & Cliff rescue service(available through www.custysmusic.com) theres a set of reels all with nautical themes played on it by Martin Hayes and John Williams which might be worth checking out, if you do Irish tunes.

Boom Boom Diddum Dattum wadum shoo-- and they swam and they swam right over the dam... a song about fishies.... there must be some that pete seeger and crew use for the Clear Water festival.... Greg Brown has a reference to a cool farm pond in "out in the country" and in Spring Wind (I think that's the tune) "to clean our lovely planet, that's a noble wish, I'm puttin' my shoulder to the wheel cuz I want to catch a fish..." and he has a lot of other water images cuz he sings about fishing a lot-- fishing with bill, laughing river----etc. also John Hartford has river tunes and river boat tunes.. Steam Whistle Blues, Julia Belle Swain, and others... and of course many sea chanties have water themes.. just deeper and saltier... and john prine's music contains water references.. in Paradise--"when i die let my ashes float down that green river, let my soul float on up to the rochester dam..." and in hello inb there-- "old trees just grow wider and rivers grow wilder every day--".. something like that--from the rusty 'old memory banks.... Tom russel and Iris Dement sing a song about a flood that washed away a town...not sure of title-any one out there??? the song roll on columbia roll on refers to hydro electric power so if "your" company is also involved in turning water in to power.. there's your tune.....good luck!

Subject: Lyr Add: WE ARE THE RIVER
From: open mike

here is my favorite river song but it will not endear you to the corporate water company--

We are the river,
We're gonna wash your levees down,
Flowin' from the mountains,
We're coming right down thru your town,
We're gonna join with the other rivers,
You know, the dam don't stand a chance,
Cuz no dam that man can build will stand,
When the sea begins to dance.

We're gonna join with the fishes,
We're gonna help them on their way,
Though the man tries to kill them,
And frighten them away,
From the depths up to the surface,
You know the fishes won't be found,
Cuz only water knows where the water flows,
When the river's underground.

Maple buds are bloomin',
The small stream trickles down,
Snows are a-meltin',
And the river rushes 'round in town
We'll have no more of your reservoirs,
Keepin' us from bein' free,
Cuz flood time is here my friend,
And we're almost to the sea.

Subject: Lyr Add: YOU NEVER MISS THE WATER TILL THE WELL...
From: JenEllen

Bobert, the music I have has that song as being written by Harry Linn and R. Howard. Is it the same song the Byrds did?

You Never Miss The Water

When a child I lived at Lincoln
With my parents on the farm
The lessons that my mother taught
To me were quite a charm
She would often take me on her knee
When tired of childish play
And as she pressed me to her breast
I've heard mother say

Chorus:
Waste not, want not
Is the maxim I would teach
Let your watch-word be despatch
And practice what you preach
Do not let your chances
Like sunbeams pass you by
For you never miss the water
'Till the well runs dry

As years rolled on
I grew to be a mischief making boy
Destruction seemed my only sport
It was my only joy
And well do I remember
When of-times well chastised
How father sat beside me then
And thus has me advised
(Chorus)

When I arrived at man-hood
I embarked on public life
And found it was a rugged road
Be-strewn with care and strife
I speculated foolishly
My losses were severe
But still a tiny little voice
Kept whispering in my ear
(Chorus)

Then I studied strict economy
And found to my surprise
My funds instead of sinking
Very quickly then did rise
I grasped each chance
And always struck the iron while t'was hot
I seized my opportunities
And never once forgot
(chorus)

I'm married now and happy
I've a careful little wife
We live in peace and harmony
Devoid of care and strife
Kind fortune smiles upon us
We have little children three
The lesson that I teach them
As they prattle round my knee
(Chorus)

You don't mention genre, does this need to be any special genre.

The water people would especially favor the sentiments in:

Strongly second the "Cool Water" nomination

Jen:

Different song entirely. I'm at work now and don't have too many of the words floatin' in my head since I don't remember ever doin' the song but I'll check em out tonight and get back to ya'. It's on the "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" LP.

Speakin' of no memory, I had forgotten that I ever posted to the thread but see that I did. When I read the initial post, the first song that came to mind today was one of the songs that came to mind a couple months ago and that is Dan Fogleburg's "The River" which is an absolutely beautiful and powerfull song but requires a decent pianist in order to do it well.

One I forgot is Neil Young's (yeah I know, there you go agin, Bobert...) "Down by the River". McKendree Springs does it better than Neil with "Crazy Horse" (Nils Lofgrin, I think..) with that electric violin creatin' all kinds of tension and power.
