From: GUEST From the Guardian, 18 May: "The Queen will not have to pay inheritance tax on her mother's estate, valued at between £50m and £70m, thanks to a deal reached with John Major's government nine years ago when she agreed to pay tax for the first time. The agreement meant that the sovereign's bequests are not liable to taxation. The palace maintains the arrangement is necessary to preserve the sovereign's financial independence and to compensate her for not being able to earn her own living." Looks like the old girl REALLY has something to celebrate, wouldn't you say? As ever, getting it over on us.

05 Jun 02 - 10:39 AM (#723544) Subject: RE: BS: Get a job dizzy lizzy! From: GUEST Have you ever thought about how much the Queen and the Royal family contributes to the nation and commonwealth? Her disbursements are much more than our living costs, electric and gas bills etc. Are you just a jealous person who cant stand the fact that some are born priviledged and some (like me) are not? I much prefer our constitutional monarchy to any of the republics you care to name. Adolph Hitler was a socialist according to the electorate. How about Africa? I'm sure most of them are sorry they elected presidents. when people start discussing abolition I always ask " do you really want to destroy such a loved and proven system of government? and what would you replace it with? an elected dictator is no solution. How boring life would be without some glamour and pagent in our lives. Celebrate history and enjoy our heritage, its not perfect but much better than most other solutions suggested. Stop being so miserable and boring, enjoy the multicultural and historic benefits of our unique Island, and smile you could have been born an Afghan woman.

05 Jun 02 - 11:18 AM (#723574) Subject: RE: BS: Get a job dizzy lizzy! From: GUEST How about some examples of European democracies? There are more than a few of them that don't have monarchies which are quite successful. Why is it you royalists are always citing fascists when you are using examples of democracies? There are enough other good examples to go by. Of course, the rest the world knows you can't tell an English royalist anything about democracy--they are convinced it is the root of all evil because they are surrounded by it, and makes them look so much worse by comparison. Hell, even the Danes and the Dutch have figured out how to do monarchy and democracy--why can't the loser English royalists figure it out? |
