BS: Music hath charm

Music certainly hath charm to soothe the savage breast.

The other day, a good friend gave me a nice banjo, and, I havn't done much with it due to feeling really awful. Today, after 7 months of no voice, one solid month of ceaseless pain and feeling like death eating a cracker, I got news that a dear friend is terminal with Lou Geherigs disease. A finer human never walked this earth, and when that hit me, I sat down to have a good bawl. Lying on the floor by my easy chair was that banjo; I picked it up and coaxed a couple of tunes out of it. It was amazing how the happy notes from something that some people dont even recognize as a musical instrument was able to lift my spirits! VIVE LE BANJOS!!

Kendall, now you've got that banjo, learn Whistling Rufus on it. You will never need to be sad for too long again, and you will be blest with new friends wherever you play it. Especially if you put a skin-head on it.

It has pretty close to the sound I've been looking for, but, I think I will go for the skin head or at least the fibreskin one. Man, what a gift! I should get sick more often! As I was talking to the friend who gave it to me, I said, I can't wait to get back to being able to sing. He said, "There are many of us who can't wait for that either."!

Yeah, I'll second (or third) that one. Give that banjo hell... They are known to take abuse well...

Sorry to hear about your friend.

Damn! If it's not one thing, it's everything else, huh?

One thing I've learned in life is that nothing is harder than going through a tough illness -- unless, of course, you're watching a loved one go through it.

Play that banjo for yourself... then play it for your friend...

Hang in there!

Better still, hit the skin head with the banjo (and I don't mean the sort of skin head that comes from a music shop), that will make lots of people happy.

Seriously, take care. I played a couple of recorders last week that belonged to a good friend who died a few years back. Had them a while, forgotten I had them and found them again whilst looking for my own. They were like old friends I've not seen for ages, I just wish I'd been able to do them and him, justice. They will always be his recorders, just as the banjo will always be his banjo. It's incredible to think that although those voices are silent and the fingers still, the sounds they made will still be heard.

Playing a banjo with your skin head isn't really orthodox, but seeing the number of Maine winters and years of bachelorhood you've survived, I guess you could get away with it without bleeding all over everything. You're a tough coot, after all. Just don't take it on the road -- once you get out of Maine, you'll find they are much less understanding about personal eccentricities of that kind! LOL!

Rick is going to be so jealous of this banjo! Hell, I might even let him play it.

If music soothes the savage breast, banjos cheer the heart. Glad you had the good sense to turn to it when you did. Keep picking...

I'll never get "picky" with the banjo; if my bare fingers are not enough, I'll give it up.
