A song was sung at my son's memorial service. It was called Everything Possible. Some words are "you can be whatever you want to be....love whomever you choose...." The words are too faint to hear on our videotape and I have too little information to be able to find it on my own. Does anyone have any more information than I?

Sherry, it's a song by Fred Small, and it's in the "Rise Up Singing" songbook. I'll transcribe if for you and post it in a few minutes.

Everything Possible

by Fred Small
(recorded on Everything Possible: Fred Small in Concert, Flying Fish CD FF 70625)

We have cleared off the table, the leftovers saved,
Washed the dishes and put them away
I have told you a story and tucked you in tight
At the end of your knockabout day
As the moon sets its sails to carry you to sleep
Over the midnight sea
I will sing you a song no one sang to me
May it keep you good company.

CHORUS:
You can be anybody you want to be,
You can love whomever you will
You can travel any country where your heart leads
And know I will love you still
You can live by yourself, you can gather friends around,
You can choose one special one
And the only measure of your words and your deeds
Will be the love you leave behind when you're done.

There are girls who grow up strong and bold
There are boys quiet and kind
Some race on ahead, some follow behind
Some go in their own way and time
Some women love women, some men love men
Some raise children, some never do
You can dream all the day never reaching the end
Of everything possible for you.

Don't be rattled by names, by taunts, by games
But seek out spirits true
If you give your friends the best part of yourself
They will give the same back to you.

CHORUS
^^

Thank you, Joe. This was a great song to be sung in my son's honor. I could hear it played in my memory, but didn't remember all of the words. Thanks again! Sherry

It's my understanding that he wrote it for Janet Peterson of Motherlode; that she asked for a lullabye that would speak to her son who was getting **** from the kids at school for having two mothers and no dad. It's on their album.
It's a wonderful song.
The chords in "Rise Up Singing" leave a little bit to be desired, at least if you want to stick to Fred's melody . I know, I've tried. Barbara

From RUS, page 239:

(D) A - G D / A G D - / A - Bm - / C - A -
D - G D / G Em A - / D G D G / D A G -

D A G A / G A D - /
D A G A / G A D - /
D D7 Em A / G Em A -
D A G A / G A D - /

RUS chords are usually close approximations to the best chords. Occasionally they are exactly right.

Here are 2 alternative keys to sing EVERYTHING POSSIBLE, which I got from the playing of Roy Bailey. These chords are not precisely as RB plays them - I have made a couple of alterations to suit my style and - I hope - make it sound just a little different and suit the mood. See what you think.

I'M LOOKING FOR A TITLE AND/WORDS OF A SONG WITH THE LINES. "SOME LIVE BY THEMSELVES, SOME WILL GATHER FRIENDS AROUND,SOME HAVE CHILDREN. SOME NEVER DO. ... AND I THINK. THE MEASURE OF YOUR WORDS AND DEEDS IS THE LOVE YOU LEAVE BEHIND YOU WHEN YOU'RE GONE.

Everything Possible by Fred Small
It's in Rise Up Singing, I don't have time to post words right now. If someone else doesn't, I ll get to it later. It's also recorded by Motherlode, Janet Peterson on tape. Fred wrote it for her.
Blessings,
Barbara

Ah, Barbara, what a finely-honed memory you have! The song was familiar, but I couldn't place it. However, I have finely-honed search techniques, and I found this (click here) and this.
Can't say that I really like Fred Small. Reminds me too much of my ex-wife's ex-shrink, I think.
Nonetheless, mdennerly, if you're looking for the song,
