The afternoon play on Radio 4 on Thursday 13 June (2.15pm after the Archers repeat) is The Charge of the Light Brigade, to John Osborne's original screenplay, completed but not used for the movie of 1968. According to the Radio Times "it takes a revisionist view of the military and political blundering that surrounded the British involvement in the Crimean War, culminating in the Battle of Balaklava in 1854".

First soldier is played by John Tams, who is also credited with the music and lyrics alongside "Michael" Waterson, who also appears as "Ballad singer".

Other members of the cast include Charles Dance, Joseph Fiennes, Geoffrey Palmer, Alec McCowen, James Ellis, Donald Sinden, Angela Douglas.

There was a very informative TV program on the other night about it with memorable graphics of cannonballs bowling along the ground at the Lights, and a seemingly reasonable explanation of what conspired to lead to the apparent folly involving the four chaps in charge .

You won't keep a job with the bbc if anyone finds out that you are interested or knowledgeable on English heritage music Ralphie.

Skip...
Strangely, I've never even heard an episode of the Archers.
It's only 12 and a half minutes long (on average) and during that time, I'm setting up the next prog!!

It'll probably be on CD or DAT tape, but, basically Yes!

Well, I've survived here a long time, and redundancy could be nice !!
Regards all Ralphie
PS. More Seriously, Fiona on Late Junction (R3) might be playing some old Tony Rose tracks tonight (Tuesday 11th June). Have a listen if you get this in time.

I forgot to mention, when listing the credits for C of the L B, that the director is Bill Bryden (which I guess explains how John Tams and Mike Waterson got into it....). It lasts an hour and a halfwork on Thursday afternoon so even if I manage to work out how to tape it I suspect there will be bits missing somewhere.

I can't see much chance of stuffing the Bull with Catters while Sid and Jolene are in Nashville on honeymoon and Peggy's managing the pub.

Hey Ralphie, if you really want to leave Auntie sneak in one night and put the programme out when we working stiffs can hear it.

Better let us know first, wouldnt want your sacrifice to be in vain.

Thanks Ralphie for telling us about Fiona's show which I hadn't spotted before - I've not heard the Etchingham Steam Band and Shirley Collins for a long time. And hearing Bill Caddick sing "John o'dreams" without custard creams was pretty enjoyable too.

Agree with that Herga, listening now.

To say that the show "features" Nic Jones and New Victory Band is a little misleading
