Lyr Req: Lost in the Stars (from Walter Huston)

Subject: An Old Walter Houston Song
From: GUEST,Irishmiss

This is really driving me crazy - I first heard this song on an old 78 way back in the 50's so it was probably old then. One side contained September Song by Walter Houston, a beautiful rendition I might add and the other side contained a wonderful song whose title I can no longer remember - something about little star and big star and God holding them in the palm of his hand.

Can anyone help me please?

Thanks!

I think it was titled Lost in the Stars. Now I'll go look for it.

Geez... I didn't think any 'Catters were old enough to remember Walter Houston! Of those that do, how many knew he was born in Toronto?

His name is Walter Huston. Often made mistake. A great actor (Treasure of the Sierra Madre, etc., etc.)

Found a midi here and the lyrics are...

LOST IN THE STARS

(Maxwell Anderson/Kurt Weill)

Before Lord God made the sea and the land,
He held all the stars in the palm of his hand.
And they ran through his fingers like grains of sand,
And one little star fell alone.
Then the Lord God hunted through the wide night air
For the little dark star on the wind down there.
And he stated and promised he'd take special care
So it wouldn't get lost again.
Now a man don't mind if the stars grow dim
And the clouds blow over and darken him,
So long as the Lord God's watching over them,
Keeping track of how it all goes on.
But I've been walking all the night and the day,
Till my eyes get weary and my head turns gray.
And sometimes it seems maybe God's gone away,
And we're lost out here in the stars.
Little stars, big stars, blowing through the night,
And we're lost out here in the stars.
Little stars, big stars, blowing through the night,
And we're lost out here in the stars.

...from a Broadway musical of the same name.

And he was John Huston's Father, and Angelica Huston's Grandfather. I believe.

Huston starred as Peter Stuyvescent in "Knickerbocker Holiday",and was actually the one who made the song famous--

One of his best parts was in Dodsworth-1936-directed by Billy Wilder. A true gem, which I guess Ted Turner owns now. I saw it once on tv about 30 yrs. ago and never forgot him. He was flawless.

His most intriguing role was as Mr. Scratch in the 1941 film "The Devil and Daniel Webster" AKA "All That Money Can Buy." I agree that his version of "September Song" is marvellous and has never been bettered.

Six years too late, but "Lost in the Stars" was actually made famous by Todd Duncan, who sang the role of Stephen Kumalo, in the show of the same name-the music, by Kurt Weill, is wonderful, the story that of "Cry Beloved Country" , and is best thought of as a musical tragedy--

Don't do MP3. Would love CD of "September Song" Walter Huston but can only find "Berlin to Broadway" in UK. Any information would be appreciated.

How and when did the lyrics morph into variations such as "I spend with you" (present tense), or "I'll spend with you" (future tense), or "I'll spend with you" v. "I'll share with you", etc.
Should I assume Walter Huston's is the true version?
Thanks. I always loved this song.

"Lost in the stars" poped into my mind this morning, from nowhere, and I remembered that it was such a sweet sad song. I was proud of myself for remembering enough of the info. to find this site. If anyone can direct me to a CD of the two songs in question, I would be so appreciatetive. Better hurry, I,m 82 and counting.

You should download the application "Spotify", register (it's free), and then enter "Lost in the Stars" in the search box. I just did this (the search, I've been a Spotify user for quite a while). You can also just go to the website, sign up, and listen there.

Spotify is the best listening app ever, because you can enter the name just about any song, artist, composer, and listen to whatever you want. It is free (there are occasional ads, which you can get rid of by subscribing to the premium service, but you don't have to).

This is by far the easiest way there is to listen to the songs you want to hear. It will take you a couple minutes to download and register, and after that, you can listen to anything you want, for as long as you want. and it costs nothing.

Would you believe--Leonard Nimoy made an LP and this was one of the songs on it? As I recall one side had songs related to the Spock personna and the other side had other songs he wanted to sing.

Just noticed there's a line missing in the LITS words above:

But I've been walking all the night and the day
Till my eyes get weary and my head turns gray
And sometimes it seems maybe God's gone away
Forgetting the promise that we heard him say
And we're lost out here in the stars...

I first saw a live performance of this show when I was seven and it broke my heart.

Bet all you folkies would love The Hills Of Ixopo too, which is the opening number and uses the poetical words straight from Alan Paton's text. Magical.

There is a lovely road that runs from Ixopo
Into the hills
These hills are grass-covered and rolling
And they are lovely beyond any singing of it
