(And thanks for all the additions since my first posting.) Two curious ones I came across recently were JEN 2 Kenny Ball and His Band - Hiawatha Rag, and JEC 507 Hugo Dalton - same. I believe Dalton (or perhaps D'Alton) was a mandolin player, so the JEC series could be C for classical. Or it could be a different label altogether! |

These were from field recordings made by Mike Yates and Sybil Taylor in 1964-65. [See the National Sound Archive catalogue NSA under the catalogue number 1SE0044333 for full details.] Also on the same record were: The nutting girl by Ernest Yates from Marsden, West Riding of Yorkshire The blackbird's nest by John Cantwell from Standlake, Oxon Down the green groves by Fred Jordan of Craven Arms, Shropshire. I have been researching the history of this label for some considerable time and have most (not all!) of the records on the label. The oldest records are the JEL (L) prefix which indicated a Jazz source. You are right about the codes used A = American B = British (English!) S = Scots I = Irish P = Political (Oddball) C = Classical (more oddball) N = Negro L = Jazz There was another set of codes which explains the variation in letters used. The central letter was used to indicate size of format. Thus:- D = single E = EP F = 10" G = 12" Sandy Paton recorded the first 3 records on the JEA series - JEA1, JEA2 & JEA3. Colin Pomroy was the man behind the label with the help of Paul Carter often as the inspiration with the folky recordings. Bernard Mattimore was also often involved as an engineer. However, Prison Worksongs LP Collector JGN 1006 consists of field recordings made in the Louisiana State Pentientary, Angola made by Harry Oster about 1959. The disc also appeared on Oster's own label (Folklyric?) before being reissued by Chris Strachwitz. The tracks are currently available on Prison Worksongs Recorded at the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, L.A. Arhoolie CD 448. |

The CLE "collector's limited edition" refers to a short-lived set of very limited issues by the wonderful Mike Yates. There is a collector label in America, Collectors editions relating to Jazz and the word "collector" in several other labels. Only the English label has the JEC1 sort of catalogue numbering system so that should help you work out which is the work of the Colin Pomroy label and which isn't. As you may have worked out - the existence of JGN1006 (see above) requires the other catalogue numbers JGN1001, JGN1002, JGN1003, JGN1004 & JGN1005 to have already been allocated. They were! Memphis Slim (with Alexis Korner), Charlie Parker, & Speckled Red were amongst the artists on these other records. Blind Blake had a 10" record issued For the real obsessives - There was another label owned by the same company called "Range". They had a very few issues of Country & Blues related material. Even better, do you know where the master tapes are? It might be an interesting project to assemble some CD reissues. It should be noted that the technical quality on some of those old EPs is quite dreadful. I recently listened to a couple, and they have a huge amount of tape hiss, even for the late 1950s. |

I've had some conversations that suggest that the material was often released without any permission from the artists. Certainly I'd doubt if many royalties were ever paid. The early Jack Elliott and Guy Carawan recordings were actually from "77" label records and put on eps from the 10" LPs 77 had just issued. They were both on Charing Cross Road at a certain time, although Collector moved out to Greenford a little later in its life. I'll ask Shirley Collins next time I see her as maybe she knows. You're right it would be good to issue some of this material on CD. Jimmie MacGregor may know too and I'm in touch with him so I'll ask him next time I speak. I wonder if the masters still exist? I have some excellent copies of most of the catalogue and certainly good enough to work with. Alistair Banfield |

JEB3 The Foggy Dew was reviewed in the Gramophone magazine in Feb 1960 (along with the Sweet England LP that came out in 1959). JEB5 English Songs was reviewed in the Gramophone in February 1961 and the reviewer said it was "not one of their (Collector's) most recent issues. Can't find any reviews of JEB9 (English Songs vol 2) or JEI1508 (Shirley Sings Irish), but they (and the above) were all recorded apparently at the same 1958/59 sessions produced in London by Paul Carter. |

Also, the fonts and typography on the record label of JEB9 is quite different from that of JEB2 (Steve Benbow's Folk Four), JEB3 (Shirley Collins, The Foggy Dew) and JEB8 (A.L. Lloyd, England and Her Folk Songs, 1962) which are the only other Collector JEB EPs that I own. Is it plausible that Collector released this EP four years later than JEB3 and JEB5 (Shirley Collins, English Songs)? |

I have since been told that it almost certainly stood for "New". This is still not exactly definitive but Collector was originally "Jazz Collector" and issued 78rpm discs which were copied from American 78s. So the blues recordings and Kenny Ball Jazz were "New Jazz" to the directors of the record company at the time. Hope this clears up any earlier confusion. Also there was a classical section, a spoken voice section and an odds and sodds section which included political & obscure such as steel band and flamenco. What variety! There were 12" Lps, 10" Lps, 7" Eps, 7" singles, 78rpm singles and some singles in the late 1950s/early 1960s which were issued in both 78rpm and 45rpm formats.
