BS: early music - planning ahead

I'm just back from the Texas Toot, a week-long gathering for people who love to play early music. This means anything from the beginning of time until 1730 or so. We bring recorders, shawms, viols, lutes, krumhorns, etc. We have classes from experts, concerts and recitals. We go out to drink beer and play krumhorns, and we just have a good time in general.

The Toot is held on a college campus. You don't have to cook, wash dishes, clean house or drive for a week. It's my idea of a real vacation.

The Toot is held in Austin Texas in early June. It needs a few more people to attend. So if this interests you, mark your calendar to go to www.toot.org about next April and get all the details. ------------------ Modern Life Shock Horror

This year we had a kid along, a mere college student. I told him that he should blow into his recorder as if it were a pea shooter, and he replied, "What's that?"

WHAT IS MODERN KIDHOOD COMING TO?

Aaahh, happy days, kids with pea-shooters, apple-raiding, "corgi" cars and climbing trees. If you gave a child a pea shooter today most would want to know "how to plug it in"! I'm afraid you're the wrong side of the water for me, but your "Texas toot" sounds like fun. What's the earliest music you play? (I don't mean "what time do you start in the mornings") and where do you source it? Someone told me that the Ocarina is the oldest musical instrument so I bought one from a nearly new shop but I couldn't figure out where the jack-socket went! :-)

C-flat: At home, the earliest music we play is from the 1100's - the song "Singer's Sing" which has a melody like Gregorian chant. also the Cantigas de Santa Maria from Spain.

At the Texas Toot music tends not to be so old because the classes like stuff with parts. Most is from the 1500 - 1600's, though there was a class in Spanish music which went further back.

As for where it comes from - the Internet, public library; books of music from music stores, especially books for recorder; friends; recordings and church hymnals.

My Noteworthy software really gets a workout getting this music ready for the group.
