LYING EYES

City girls just seem to find out early
How to open doors with just a smile
A rich old man and she won't have to worry
She'll dress up all in lace and go in style

Late at night a big old house gets lonely
I guess every form of refuge has its price
And it breaks her heart to think her love is only
Given to a man with hands as cold as ice

So she tells him she must go out for the evenin'
To comfort an old friend who's feelin' down
But he knows where she's goin' as she's leavin'
She is headed for the cheatin' side of town

You can't hide your lyin' eyes
And your smile is a thin disguise
I thought by now you'd realize
There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes

On the other side of town a boy is waitin'
With fiery eyes and dreams no one could steal
She drives on through the night anticipatin'
'Cause he makes her feel the way she used to feel

She rushes to his arms, they fall together
She whispers that it's only for awhile
She swears that soon she'll be comin' back forever
She pulls away and leaves him with a smile

You can't hide your lyin' eyes
And your smile is a thin disguise
I thought by now you'd realize
There ain't no way to hide you lyin' eyes

She gets up and pours herself a strong one
And stares out at the stars up in the sky
Another night, it's gonna be a long one
She draws the shade and hangs her head to cry

She wonders how it ever got this crazy
She thinks about a boy she knew in school
Did she get tired or did she just get lazy
She's so far gone she feels just like a fool

My, oh my, you sure know how to arrange things
You set it up so well, so carefully
Ain't it funny how your new life didn't change things
You're still the same old girl you used to be

You can't hide your lyin' eyes
And your smile is a thin disguise
I thought by now you'd realize
There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes
There ain't no way to hide your lyin' eyes
Honey, you can't hide your lyin' eyes
enjoy
cheers brad

The Cowpie link (in the other thread) has the chords formatted well, but they left out 3 verses.  Here is the full song, with chords in proper position.

Always thought of this as a modern version of "A Bird In A Gilded Cage".

Happy New Year, Genie, nice notation, but are you sure that the penultimate chord in the last line of verse and chorus should be G ?

My instinct would be to play an F there.

Thanks for the spiffy notation, Genie, and thanks for all the verses, Brad--somehow I've been playing it leaving out the ones about where exactly she's going, "on the cheatin' side of town." I agree with Murray on that penultimate chord tho, at least that's the way I play it (tho transposed to G). It's a great song and much fun to play.

Well, Murray, I took the chords from Cowpie, played the song with them (both with and without key change) and they worked.

But, getting down my guitar again and trying F, I like it better, if you'r going to use only one chord between the Dm and the C (in the last line of the verse and chorus).

However, my preference is to go to F on the word "hide'," then to G or G7 on "lyin'," and then resolve to C at the end of the line.*

Genie

*If I play full chords, that is. Often I just throw in melody or harmony notes in place of some chord changes.

Incidentally, if you play it fingerstyle in G then you can do this solo quite easily - it's quite easy to play the melody on the top strings whilst keeping some kind of rhythm (thumb and occasional strums) going on the bottom strings.

I used to have an Eagles songbook with this one in it. That book had it in the key of G.

I like the fingering for C, and I like the ease of playing Cmaj7, and the way it sounds, better than Gmaj 7. If I play the song in G I feel like I need to capo up to A. But you can transpose the key to whatever works for you.

just seen this thread, sorry, looks like you have all the info already.

I always play it in the key of G same as the songbook.

Good luck with it, it's a great song.
