FREE THE PEOPLE

Laws were made for people
And the law can never scorn
The right of a man to be free
Free the people!
Let them have their say
Free the people!
Let them see the light of day

A dismal dawn was breaking when
They took her man away
Not knowing what was his crime
Just what he was guilty of
None of them could say
But they'll think of something in time
He said: goodbye and remember
We shall overcome

Comforting her children softly crying in the night
She tried very hard to explain
You know your daddy never did a thing that wasn't right
So soon he's bound to be home again
He is a good man
And he shall overcome

What does it profit him
The right to be born
If he suffers the loss of liberty?
Laws were made for people
And the law can never scorn
The right of a man to be free
We are the people
And we shall overcome
Free the people!
Let them have their say!
Free the people!
Let them see the light of day!

(Recorded by The Dubliners)

the above message and the DT entry do not credit the songwriting team Phil Coulter and B Martin

according to another thread, the Dubliners recording does credit Coulter and Martin

I was looking for information because I saw Chris Kavanagh doing a Luke Kelly tribute and he made some mistakes such as crediting The Sun is Burning (Ian Campbell) to Simon and Garfunkel and the Black Velvet Band to Ewan MacColl. Yes those people recorded the songs in question but Kavanagh said the songs were actually by them. I hadn't remembered that Free the People was a Phil Coulter song, but I believe Chris got that one right.

Phil Coulter with Bill Martin wrote "Puppet on a String" for Sandie Shaw and "Congratulations" for Cliff Richard.

He also wrote "Ireland's Call", an anthem for Ireland's Rugby team.

Phil Coulter also wrote Shang a Lang for the Bay City Rollers and had a song recorded by Elvis (Can't remember the title). He managed and produced for Planxty & The Dubliners. He has also produced and played on albums of piano music (e.g. Classic Tranquility) often heard in lifts (elevators) and super-markets. A very varied and mixed career.
