Hi- I'm seeking a lost album which was part of my Mom's record collection. It was by the New Lost City Ramblers and had such titles as "A Dollar's All I Crave," "the Old Miller" and "One Little Story The Crow Told Me" and suchlike. Any tips as to where I can procure it, or lyrics to the $ song ["Fifteen cents is all I ever had, a dollar's all I crave..brougth nothing with me into this world, gonna take nothing to my grave..."] thanks! : ) sarah

I don't know if Tom Paley can remember the song - I assume that he was on the record.

He's a regular at Sharps f/c at Cecil Sharp House, London, UK.

I'll e-mail him and see if he knows.

Album info:Dollar Is All I Crave

New Lost City Ramblers. New Lost City Ramblers, Vol. 4, Folkways FA 2399, LP (1962), cut# 13

Lyrics:

Late last night -way down town-

I was late last night when Willie came home
Heard him a-rapping on the door
Slipping and a-sliding with his new shoes on
Willie don't you rap no more

Oh me, oh my
What's gonna become of me
I's down town just fooling around
No one to stand by me

One old shirt is about all I've got
And a dollar is all I crave
Brought nothing with me into this world
Gonna take nothing to my grave

*Refrain

Wish I was down in old Baltimoe
Sitting in an easy chair
One arm around my old guitar
And the other around my dear

*Refrain

Wish I had a needle and thread
As fine as I could sew
Sew all the good looking girls to my back
And down the road I'd go

*Refrain

(I'm not 100% certain these are the NLCR lyrics.....)

The chorus I have by Doc Watson is:

Way downtown, just foolin' around
They took me to the jail
and the rest just disappeared from by brain! When it comes back, I'll let you know...

It came back!

Way downtown, just foolin' around
They took me to the jail
Told me, and they told mine
No one would go my bail.

And the line about if I had a needle, as fine as I could sew, I'd sew her in my pocket, and down the road I'd go is from Get along home, Cindy Cindy as sung in the movie Rio Bravo (unless it was Rio Lobo, I confuse those 2) with Dean Martin, John Wayne, the young Nelson who sings this song, and on the harmonica is that old loony from To Have and Have Not whose name is escaping me too. It isn't in the version of this song Doc Watson sings.

I remember the first two verses as above (but IT was late last night...I heard...), and although I have heard that chorus, the I thought the other chorus went
Way downtown, just foolin' around
They took me to the jail
And it's oh me and it's oh my
No one to go my bail.

very little different from what Mrrzy says.

You know, Philippa, it may be that I am HEARING "tole me and they tole mine" when what he sang was Oh me and it's Oh my - or vice versa! We may have found Lady Mondegreen again.... singing your chorus in Doc Watson's accent, I can't really tell.

Now, was it Rio Bravo?
